Was just wondering how the structures of progressive trance, and house usually are? There probably isn't a specific structure that I should follow everytime, but whats a good start?
Subtle
if u use a specific structure it isnt progressive.. its all about own ideas and creativity.. but one thing though.. make the track mixable.. percs intro and outro must be long..
Elfs1der
But whats the definition of progressive trance, it builds up to many layers right?
BetaFactory
Well, that's at least the meaning of the word progressive. :) That's also the basic foundation of progressive trance IMHO, but how you progress with the layers is another thing, very individual.
Elfs1der
What are these basic foundations though?

I'm reading this book called "The Dance Music Manual", it's great. It covers exactly what you're asking about for Trance, Techno, House, and a few other genres, plus a whollllllle lot more (from music theory to programming to mixing to mastering to promotion and everywhere in between and more) It's definitely helped me understand a lot about EDM production and music in general.

Don't try to copy anyone else man. Just structure it in a way that sounds good to you - if it doesn't sound good keep changing it until it does - be creative. Put some of yourself into it (I know that's a cliche but try it).

Where did you get that book?

I think its important to get a general knowledge of the genre, that way you know what has different effects on people. For example, what gives it the "energy", what makes it sound dark, what gives you goosebumps...that sort of thing

I got it from my school's bookstore but its available online from places like amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...l/-/0240519159/

It's by Rick Snoman published by Focal Press. All the reviews I've seen have been excelent and so far I agree and I'm about halfway through. I plan on reading it (or at least parts of it) again when I'm done.
