to work out the splendid superior idea I have in my head :p

i always screw it up with something :D

but to give one answer:

Creating something 'new' (not like anjunabeats/magik music ; a million of the same crap with sometimes a special one between the crap :p) and mastering are the hardest parts

For me the hardest part is the kick and the bassline (all layers), once they are finished and really good, the rest comes naturally

what do you guys think the hardest part of making a song is?

finishing a song and liking it by the end of it.

95% of all the stuff i produce is unfinished. whilst every new song my kicks, hats, leads all sound better produced than the last the point is i can never put it together into one package and feel like ive made a good tune at the end of it. its still all very disparate. i have alot of ideas, but they dont often sit well together. the more i keep forcing it the more it shows in the finished product and it nearly always ends up getting discarded. too often i overwork a song until i hate it. and you cant write good music if you hate what you are producing. someone said that the worst artistic crime you can make is to not finish what you started and im inclined to agree. forgot who said it though. its hard to remain focused on a song from beginning to end unless you are experienced enough where you can bosh up whole tracks in a few hours - what a way to capitalise on momentum. but to get to the stage where you can do that you have to ed it up a million and one times before you consistantly get it right.

for me its getting my mix to sound exactly the way i want it to. but lately ive been using reference tracks (helps soooooooooooooo much) to get my levels,eq-ing,compression to sound similar to. I find that mastering is the easier of the two parts (mixing/mastering) However sometimes the mix will just flow.. i guess it depends on the project

Could be many things, it changes.

First to find the motivation to start production process all over again :p To create a melody that's not been used before. A good main idea, hook that makes the song stand out somehow. Produce a rolling bassline that sits perfectly with a tight beat and work out versatile, good sounding drum parts to make it really rhythmic. Then get all the synths and effects to work well and natural together. The whole process can be really difficult, sometimes it takes lot's of time and sometimes things just flows by itself. If I must pick one, innovative melodies then but before it definitely was the whole mixdown process.
