Filmography: Gunna direct a film

Me and some friends and I are going to direct / act / produce a movie about 'ghetto' life in Southern Ontario, Kitchener more specifically. While we're not trying to do a ripoff of say, La Haine or Ma 6-T va crack-er for examples, it would be similar in it's own ways.

Before you say 'you're just a ing wigger', don't. I'm just a poor white kid living in a poor neighbourhood, not some ****** with money wearing jerseys and wearing lugz. If you think theres no ghettos or low-income areas, take a trip here to Kitchener, or some places in Montreal, or Vancouver, or some of the urban native reserves across the provinces, and say that again.

Most people we've talked to said, how can you make a movie like that, when you live in Canada. People just don't realize that the coutry isn't eating poutine and leaving your doors unlocked. I've lived in the poorest areas, living in bad apartment/housing projects, native housing, rough neighbourhoods, gangs (theres alot in Kitchener) etc and it's not what people think. Theres crime, drugs, violence, racism, basically you have to live it to know it does infact exist here in Canada.

Now, to my question. I'm amature, and have no real knownledge. We'll be filming two weeks straight. I'll be simply following my friends around with a camera, living our lives, as if we weren't making a movie. It may seem boring to the majority of people who have money and live in a two floor house, but what we want to do is make it entertaining, and realistic as possible, showin what life is to people like me/us. What I want to know, is there any Do's or Dont's to follow when making a film. Weather I sholdn't film inside a store, cause I don't wanna get anybody pissed, etc. I'll be filming using a borrowed Canon XL1, which is a very good MiniDV camera:

This probably aint' the best place to ask, but it. :p

EDIT: Weather I get good replies or not, if anybody does or knows anybody who produces hip hop or is a turntablist, let me know, as I need some music which dosent involve me paying royalties. :D

ha, well noone cares about your life first off. Because of that, you might have to kinda either script a little bit, or don't film a normal day. go when someone has something to do that is kinda major that everyone has to do....like say someone is getting a real job, orbuying a car, or getting a loan, or they owe money around town. you need to have something interesting to film.

once you get that down just let the people be themselves, if they have interesting personalities it will come through, but if they are knobs, then you are wasting your time.

also, after seeing a few reality shows being filmed, remember that people act totally different on camera, even a little crappy one like that (also are you going to record the sound with something other than the mic on the camera, its always best to have a seperate mic to record everything).

bottom line, if you just follow them around for 2 weeks you are just gonna have a boring reality show on your hands, and everyone is sick of those.

I've got a unique idea. Tape yourself and your friends going around town doing stupid things like skateboarding down staircases and such. You could name it "Dumbass" or something clever like that.

nice camera
one thing though, if your camera people are amateurs, make sure you got someone who really knows their doing editing

You need to make a fictional story behind it ... like a goal they're after or a common point.

If the movie does not have a direction it'll be a boring docu, unless you keep it on point ( including interviews or short interludes can be of substance if done properly).

If the idea is just to film every day life, no matter how shocking it is, it's going to be boring. You need to center this around specific things.

Otherwise basics, review your content as often as possible that's pretty much a given, get proper sound takes, and keep that damn camera steady.
There's a lot you could go on about in detailing making a good movie but just a few of my words are going to be irelevant if you truly have no experience in the matter.

Glad to see you reference La Haine which in my opinion is one of the most under-rated movies from a technical aspect point of view at least, the filming is beyond me.
Ma 6-T va crack-er was kind of a cheap joke on the whole urban scene.

Good luck.

Well, you have a point Boomer. We do plan on doing something specific, or if we can't think of anything, just "re-do" something that was a prime moment in a life. I didn't mean to make it sound like a reality show or anything, because personally, those ing suck. For sound we'll have an external microphone for sure, as built-in suck.

I do know how to operate a camera, and know lots about cinematography, mezzir, so editing wont be a problem.

jdat, you're right about the technical aspect of La Haine, it was reallygood. If they didn't film it in black and white, it would have been alot different. It just adds to the whole urban life feel.

Anyways, I'll work on it. Eventually have an XviD up for people who are bored and feel like seeing Canadian ghetto life. :p :wtf:

Visually, apart from the story, what I want the film to do is what some French movies did. They showed the viewr that France isnt drinking expensive wine and eating at some cafe. People have mis-conceptions of Canada being 100% nice and perfect, when it's anything but. So, hopefully by filming in these housing projects my friend lives in and my neighbourhood, people will see that it's not rows and rows of suburban houses neatly lined up as people think it to be. Again, that won't be what the movie is about, but it will be the setting. Basically, the ghetto, but with a story interesting enough to keep somebody interested, which I still need to think up. :p
