Police crack $100M ecstasy ring
'Happy and sad day' for Markham, mayor says

CURTIS RUSH
STAFF REPORTER THESTAR.COM

York Regional Police announced today what they believe is the biggest ecstasy seizure in Canadian history after drug ingredients valued at between $100 million and $500 million were uncovered in a series of sweeps last week.

Seven people, mostly from the B.C. area, have been arrested.

In total, three homes and four storage units in Toronto and Markham were raided over three days last week, police said today at a news conference.

The police operation began Dec. 6 when police started tracing precursor chemicals used in the production of ecstasy. There are no restrictions to buying these chemicals, said Detective Don Cardwell of the vice squad.

"These chemicals were traced to certain individuals," he said.

Three residences were raided last Wednesday, two in Toronto and one in Markham, which led to the seizure and arrests. The investigation led police to four storage units that contained the chemicals, Cardwell said.

The residences raided were on Glenbourne Park Drive in Markham, Shallowford Court and Roxanne Court in Toronto and a storage facility on Sheppard Ave. E.

On Friday, there were two more raids, on storage units on Finch Ave. and on Dynamic Drive in Toronto, police said.

On Saturday, another warrant was executed at a storage unit on Middlefield Rd. in Scarborough.

It's "a happy and a sad day" for Markham, Mayor Don Cousens said.

"The happiness is we closed a few doors to ecstasy. I'll be happier when we say there is no more of that within our community."

Hey Emz, Markham, isn't that were you live? Yet you always seem to come up with info like this all the time, first :haha:

Yeah I saw that in the paper this morning. I don't really see what the point is in seizing all those pills, when they cost next to nothing to make. Wouldn't harder, more expensive drugs like cocaine/heroine be a better target to shut down dealers?

Anyone?
StereoPrincess
well ecstasy may take nothing to make but the money made from the dealing of it go to greater purchases of crime-related things.

of course the best sorts of business is when you put in a little bit and make a lot more out of it.

cocaine is also cheap to make, it's just expensive to transport. with ecstasy you don't have to transport it anywhere, just make it in each city.
