1) i read there's no real difference between DVD+ and DVD- media (http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/2279)
but i just wondered what people views on it are? the drive im gettign supports both forms, but i'm going to buy 100 blank discs and wondered if there's any outstanding views on +r / -r discs. any comments?

2) If i'm using 4.7GB media and i want to back up a couple of my film dvd's as they are starting get heavily scratched, is it possible to compress the film so it fits on one 4.7GB disc? If so, how? If not, how do i go about splitting the film to fit over 2 discs? I will be wanting to play the DVD on a regular dvd player afterwards.

3) I have some home movies saved on my computer in both mpeg and avi formats, will it be possible to burn those to dvd so they can be played on a regular dvd player at all? will i have to convert etc?

The software i will have is:

Nero 6 OEM Suite
Alcohol 120%

thanks for any help,

Nell

1) Personally I use DVD-R, because some DVD Players don't like +, but you should find out if you DVD Player supports +, and I think some older dvd-rom drives also have problems with +.

2) Get DVD Decryptor and DVD Shrink. Great programs, you can easily shrink DVDs so they fit on 4.7GB DVDRs, and you really don't lose any noticeable quality. You can split a movie over two discs but that is a bit more complicated and you can read into that on the DVD Decryptor or DVD Shrink Forums.

3) You can just put MPEG right on a DVD with Nero or your DVD Authoring program of choice, and it will work. AVI may need converting though.

EDIT: Also, in terms of DVD-R Media, the best media to buy is Ritek. I buy Ritek G04's, which are 4x DVD-R media, but I use my hacked firmware for my pioneer 108 to remove the media burn speed lock and burn them at 8x with no problem. When it comes to media don't go cheap, you'll regret it because you will wind up with discs that do not work, or discs that stop working.

The best site I have found for DVD-R media in terms of pricing and everything is www.supermediastore.com

any other questions let me know.

1. DVD-R is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. DVD+R is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs. You have to see which one works for your dvd player, some players only play dvd-r, some only play dvd+r, others play both. Clicky here to checky > http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php

2. dvdshrink.org if you want to shrink it to fit dvdr disc. For all your dvdr needs go here http://www.videohelp.com/guides

3. http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?howtoselect=6#6 select your video conversion from the format conversion drop-down menu.

sorry i'm lazy

Dvd shrink is absolutely the best choice for shrinking dvd's to either dvd5 or dvd9. If this somehow doesnt work (happens sometimes) use dvd decrypt to decrypt the whole disc to your hdd, then open it with dvd shrink. dvd shrink make the disk "region-free"

I always burn with nero, and use dvd+r as much as I can. Cause I only have 4 x on-, while I have 8 on +. I have plextor 708A.

There is differences regarding +/-, but i wont go in on them now
