I'm thinking of getting an alternative mp3 player to ipod. Can't wait long enough for their flash ipods to come out.
So this is what I'm thinking of getting when it releases in January. It register as an external harddrive when connecting to any computer, hence, we could transfer music w/o the hassle of needing partied programs.

November 12, 2004, Seoul - Cowon Systems (CEO Park Nam Gyu, www.cowon.com) releases 'iAUDIO 5', the industry's first portable MP3 player that supports SKT's new concept, ubiquitous music service 'MelOn', in partnership with SK Telecom (CEO Kim Sin Bae, www.sktelecom.com) on November 15.
SK Telecom's MelOn (www.melon.co.kr) is the first wired and wireless integrated music service that allows users to enjoy music unlimitedly anytime, anywhere with their portable MP3 player, PC, or mobile phone at 5,000 won a month.
In addition to iAUDIO 5 being released simultaneously with the launching of the MelOn music download service, Cowon Systems plans to support the MelOn music download service with the existing iAUDIO U2 and iAUDIO G3 models through a firmware upgrade as well as all iAUDIO models to be released in the future, thus building a foundation for MP3 players that strategically support SKT's content services.
iAUDIO 5 is a multi-functional, super-mini product featuring color LED backlight visualizations that can express 1,000 colors, high-quality appearance, excellent durability, and stylish design. This product weighs only 28g, and allows continuous playback for up to 20 hours with just one small AAA battery, supports high-speed file transfer of up to 20 Mbps via USB 2.0, which is appropriate for a mobile storage device.
In addition, iAUDIO 5 is equipped with a 128*64 graphic LCD and an additional 4-line wide segment LCD consisting of segment LCDs so that users can check the overall operation status at one glance, as well as built-in common fonts that can display over 40,000 characters of worldwide languages to support more beautiful displays. Furthermore, the embedded lyrics database can store the lyrics of up to 150,000 song titles which can be displayed in 4 lines automatically while you listen to music. To implement delicate high-quality sound, the world-famous BBE sound effects have been fine tuned and reproduced in 'JetEffect' sound effects that allow the adjustment of a whopping 1.2 trillion sound tones.
iAUDIO G3 supports multi codecs and can play not only MP3 player, but WMA, OGG, ASF, and WAV as well. The embedded clock enables time display, alarms, and automatic scheduled recording of FM radio programs. You can also create pretty and cute logos as well as moving logos using the bundled JetLogo program to decorate your unique MP3 player. iAUDIO G3 also provides direct encoding feature which allows you to conveniently record as MP3 files directly from CD player or cassette player without going through a PC with the auto sync feature.
iAUDIO 5 replaces specialized language study machines with such useful features as section looping, rewinding and forwarding in selected sections, and resume. In particular, it displays automatic lyrics in 4 lines which is the largest than any other MP3 player, so you can see lyrics in the relevant language while listening to English, Japanese or Chinese pop music. You can also bookmark up to 20 files which is very useful for language study. iAUDIO's website offers various language contents including English conversations and business English for free download.
CEO Park Nam Gyu said 'SK Telecom's introduction of the fixed price system for unlimited services with its new concept music service MelOn, a first in Korea, will greatly stimulate the online music service market. As a leader of MP3 player brands, iAUDIO will allow its customers to use MelOn's huge music database of over 570,000 song titles, which will set a new model for the online music industry connected with mobile players in the future.
At the same time with the launch of iAUDIO5, Cowon Systems offers a free coupon for MelOn service to buyers of iAUDIO MP3 players that support the MelOn service. This free coupon allows users to use the MelOn service for free until February 28 of the next year when they register on the MelOn site within this year.

Here are legitimate reasons why I'm holding out on the iPod:
http://www.bythom.com/apple.htm
I admit the iPods are great but unless they fix the issue below, from the article, I will wait or just get alternatives.
1. Unlock the iPod-to-computer transfer.
2. License FairPlay. Heck, license the whole software system and architecture to dedicated personal electronics manufacturers. Why can't a Nikon Coolwalker have iTunes compatibility?
3. Provide removable batteries.
4. Beef up the resistance to thumps, bumps, and pressure, or provide us with a clear rubber casing to protect our expensive investments.
5. In general, stop coming up with new restrictions on uses and users, and lift the old ones. Specifically, don't make small changes that cause third party software to quit working (or if you have to, work with them to fix the problem) |

| No offense, but I fail to see why it's necessary to have 1000+ songs on an mp3 player...1 gig is plenty of space |

The i-Pod is the quintessential victory of mass marketing over quality of product. With extensive product placements (in movies like Blade Trinity) and an admittedly cool design the I-Pod barks more than it bites. I was almost caught in all the hooplah and was looking forward to buying one when a friend did. So I got a chance to give it a test run.
Bottom line, it's not all that. Battery life 12 hours- wtf? Can't create playlists on the fly like the Creative Zen (this was a major bitch). Sketchy sound quality- not even sure about the sound specifics. I also hate i-tunes.
Anyways, a lot of good reasons for me not to buy an i-pod (will probably hold out for the next generation of players). The only reasons to buy the i-pod seem to be its aesthetic appeal and position as a modern pop-culture phenomenon. |

I've said it a dozen times before and I'll probably say it at least a dozen more within the next few months...
Buy an IRiver or don't buy an MP3 player at all. Period.
I've owned/used at least one player from each of the major companies on the market... IRiver owns them all. I'll have my iFP195-TC until IRiver rolls out with something else worth the money. |

| If you only listen to full mixes instead of dozens of 3 minute songs your battery will last several times longer. I [more or less] only listen to full sets and my battery regularly lasts over a day. The more you force your ipod to locate, pull up, and cache new files, the less your battery is going to last. |
