Setting up multiple synths?

Hey guys,

Right now I am using an Audiophile 2496 (1x1 midi interface) and have 3 synths and a few outboard racks that all require midi ports.

So basically I just rather have them all accessible and ready to go rather then switching midi cables under my desk whenever needed. I think ideally I would like an 8x8 interface rack (Like this) but noticed there is no audio line in,outs? so I'm assuming I would need a mixer or audio interface to go with it? or would I be better off with something completely different?

Thanks in advance

Why don't you just upgrade your sound card?

Id recommend sticking with M-Audio, and getting either a Delta66 or Delta10/10.

I can highly recommend the motu 8x8
very very good- it was faultless when i had one, and i was using 11 pieces of midi gear on it (i daisychained some as 8 outs wasnt enough)
handy having the one midi in or out on the front too for 'guest' hardware

Motu is the choice.

I having Midi sport 2x2. Had 3 outboard gear so, normally I just plug in and out from the midi interface. Its very troublesome for that.

But then having more I/O for Midi and Line is the best choice of all :toothless
cheesy
As a temporary solution, if all (or at least 2 of the 3) of your synths have "Thru" MIDI ports you can just daisy chain them. This isn't ideal since there is a slight latency for each one it has to go through)

I'd like to eventually get something like THIS or THIS Edirol MIDI interfaces which can also act as standalone hardware MIDI patcher so you can route and two devices together even while the computer is off/disconnected. It looks like that MOTU one can do the same thing, but it's also got a lot of high end features you probably won't need. The 8x8 Edirol one is about half the price, and the 5x5 is even less. If you want MOTU without those extra features/price maybe consider the MIDI Xpress XT

I've never used any of these products so I can't really say how good they are, but MOTU and Edirol are reputable companies, so it's something to consider.

And yes you'll need another sound card. I'd also like to get a MOTU 828mk2 but they're about $750, although it would go nice with an 8x8 MIDI interface (if you have that much equipment!)

I wouldn't chain and if you do certainly not more then 3.. Chaining is a pain. I did it for a while. You loose midi channels on your gear ex: if you have the first synth on chain playing midi channel 1, you can't play something else on midi channel 1 on the second synth in chain. Go buy an 8x8 midi box (I have an amt 8 which is perfect for logic, steinberg has it's own 8x8 box too) Then you'll need a mixer, depending on what you want or what your budget is you can choose a digital (less real time controls, less noise, usable as midi controller) or an analog (more real time controls, more white noise, not usable as midi controller) mixer. Make sure you have enough i/o's to connect future gear too cause these things are full pretty fast. With a mixer and a midi box there is no need to upgrade your audiophile. You can send your softsynths to your mixer and you can record the mixer out on your inputs on a muted audio track in your sequencer. At least that's my way of working hehe
good luck !
