Italian footballers have arrived home after being among the foreign tourists caught up in the earthquake that struck southern Asia on Sunday.

Juventus midfielder Gianluca Zambrotta and AC Milan players Paolo Maldini and Filippo Inzaghi returned on Monday to Italy following their holiday in the Maldives.

The Maldives were one of the areas badly affected by the quake that has already claimed more than 21,000 lives. The quake, that measured 8.9 on the Richter scale, triggered tidal waves and was the worst seen since 1964.

"We only saw the end of the waves," Maldini admitted at Milan's Malpensa airport.

"But we were lucky because we were in one of the calmest places that were affected."

Inzaghi added: "I am fine, but it was a frightening experience."

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Livorno goalkeeper Cristian Lucarelli has contacted his brother, team-mate Alessandro, from Baa Atoll to say he and his children are safe.

Being half italian I've always had a love for the game and ac milan along with juventus have been my teams.

I started out as a ac supporter but when del piero came on the scene I promptly switched sides. btw how good was del piero in his teenage years.

Recently tho I find myself supporting ac milan again. It was a dream come true when I got to go to the san siro to watch celtic play milan in the champions league this year.

Alls I can say is, what a stadium, what a beatiful city (with so many beautiful ladies) and what a great football team.
