Ok, consider this a "warning" for those who won't be interested and/or will have nothing constructive to say. I'd just post it in the political forum, and I will post it there, but 95% of TOTAs then wouldn't see it.
Don't be put off by the title...it's far from just a "gay" or "AIDS" issue...though the intended audience would certianly be those concerned with such issues.
It's also a moving (IMHO) speech that's really an overall commentary on how the extreme Conservative Right has taken power in the U.S. It's also a wake up call for gays who have become complacent while their political and moral opponents have been anything but complacent. The ramifications for AIDS education, control, and a potential cure is huge as well.
Very interesting read, I thnk, though quite a long one...a difficult one too, depending upon your own ideas. I'd love for at least a few people to get through it and post their thoughts:

He kind of lost me as soon as I got to the "I think we're better than other people" part. Maybe I'll go back to that article again later but I'm just not inclined to listen to anyone who starts off on a note like that.
It's not that I'm not interested in the issue he's discussing, but the dude really needs a few lessons on how to set a tone. |

trust me...finish it.
it's FAR from a "we're better people" argument. The flavour is that gays are, by the nature of the society they live in, often more conscious of issues like equality, tolerance, creativity, etc.
I don't think he's at all intending to be elitist...he's also illustrating that all of the "good" things he associated with being gay are going by the wayside as complacency sets in. He's coming to terms with NOT be able to be as proud as he was of "gay people".
really, it's not a big part of the speech...come on, plow through it and you'll see ;) |

I think the advice here can be applied to both straight and gay. |
