Demo Versions of Production Software...

I am just getting into production. I have a list of things I need to buy (MIDI Keyboard, Speakers, Amp, Good Sound Card) but now I am trying to choose a software program.

An associate of mine at work is a producer (not professionally) and she told me that she uses the Demo (or Sample) versions of Pro-Tools & Reason and that it's great for making music.

Reason is a lot of $$$ and so is Pro-Tools and I don't have that kind of cash to spend on the software. So I was wondering if the Demo versions are good enough to get the job done?

no
they are limited versions to try before you buy..
I think a good sequencer is more important than speakers/amp so instead buy some decent headcans for now and a pa system later when you got the cash.

FLStudio has a fully operational demo on their website, just no saving at all. Reason has a Demo program but it automatically closes after 20 minutes, I dunno about Cubase or Logic *shrugs*

My friend who has the "demo's" of Reason & Pro-Tools says she has been using it for a year with no problems. She can download new sounds for it, it comes with tutorials for everything, and that she hasn't ran into any noticable restrictions...

I dunno :conf:

Reason is cracked if it is running flawlessly. 20 minute time limit on that one.

If you're on a budget I'd suggest FL Studio Producers edition (149$) or FruityLoops edition (99$, it's the same program, just a different version). Come on, you must have a 100 bucks to spend on this :) Ask your mother for a loan if you don't have a job :P

By getting Fruity you gain access to a vast amount of free VST plugins, which you can download from around the internet. Reason doesn't support VST plugins, and thus you only have 2 synths to work with, but with fruity you can always download new synths and effect plugins to use, and alot of them are freeware!

check out www.kvr-vst.com for a list of freeware stuff and general info about vst plugins.

Reason may have 2 Synths, but there powerful enough to do alot with.

screw the amp and the monitors. get yourself a pair of audio technica ATH-A500 monitor headphones for $100 USD and spend the extra cash on the sequencer and soundcard. i wasnt aware of the reason demo but i got a copy of reason adapted with my soundcard (m-audio delta 1010) as well as an m-audio edition of ableton live. both had restrictions although i dont remember either of them being time restricted. reason adapted is fully functional except you cant use refills and some of the synths are disabled. maelstrom being the most notable since i really wanted to try that one out.

the fl studio demo is save disabled and you are limited to the amount of sounds you can export to wav in order to circumvent the save restrictions. in most cases you can learn the basics on demo software but after a while, having to restart, reinstall and work around the limitations of the demo software really becomes a drag. and you'll start to hate working on productions when you have to do all this extra that you dont have to. floops isnt that expensive and you can bag a decent VSTi along with it like vanguard or z3ta+. both of those are trance monsters. you can put the rest of the cash into some quality software like soundforge or wavelab for wav editting tools and such.

you dont need to spend that much on a soundcard unless you need ins/outs/preamps etc. basically, if you plan on doing alot of live recording and working with alot of external hardware (i.e. hardware synths, samplers, workstations etc) then it pays to get a soundcard with good MIDI compatibility, lots of analogue ins/outs and depending on if you need them, digital in/out, ADAT (if you need * loads* of ins/outs), quality preamps (if you plan on recording alot from mics/guitars etc). but you are looking at over $700 for something that has more than a few of the above features and is actually any good.

otherwise, if you just plan on using software instruments and doing everything on PC, just get a cheaper soundcard with rock solid ASIO drivers since thats all you'll need.

could also be reason adapted?

Yes, as far as I know, the demos are very limited. I know reason will only run for 20 minutes, cubase won't let you save...and fl studio won't let you save. I heard that fruity loops 3 was free...is that true?

UphoricNitemare
also i believe there are some free sequencers on kvr-vst.com that accept vsti plugins...
