RCMP attending autopsy of little boy who was mauled to death by dogs

Wed Dec 29, 4:30 PM ET

MAPLE RIDGE, B.C. (CP) - RCMP said Wednesday they would attend the autopsy of a three-year-old boy who died after being mauled by one or more dogs.

RCMP said earlier that the boy suffered multiple dog bites to the face and head. The boy was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The police said the results of the autopsy would be provided to the coroner's office for its review.

As well, the Ministry of Children and Family Development is working with the RCMP in its investigation of the tragedy, said spokeswoman Theresa Lumsdon.

Police said part of their investigation would be to determine whether criminal charges are warranted and to ensure that the three remaining children are in proper care.

"We want to make sure it's a safe and secure home," said Lumsdon.

The child's distraught mother, Sherry Fontaine, 32, was hospitalized on Tuesday after police were called back to the residence in the community east of Vancouver.

The other children were staying with relatives, said Lumsdon.

Police said the adults in the house were sleeping when the attack took place.

Four dogs were in the house at the time of the incident including three Rottweilers and a collie.

Two of the Rottweilers were being cared for by the family while their owner was away.

Police said the dogs were being kept in a closed-off basement area but escaped and attacked the child.

It was then that the family called 911 at about noon, police said.

One Rottweiler and the collie have been put down.

The article doesn't specifically say that the collie attacked the child. It states that the collie was amongst the other dogs in the basement.

Well the collie was put down! And i guess rottweilers should be banned too?
Skipper
I've always thought rottweilers were dangerous.

As an aside, it was probably the owners choice to put down the dogs. Perhaps they weren't sure if the collie was the "perp" of this particular incident, but after your child has been mauled to death, do you really want to take any chances?
Jayx1
So you think we should ban them too? Why dont we just ban all dogs and make it mandatory to declaw cats?

It could of been a Labrador Retriever and they still would of put it down. Do you see a whole lot of Lab or Collie maulings in the news? I'm sure it's a big conspiracy that only Rottie attacks are shown by the media.

I think the problem here is that politicians are passing these laws such as banning pitbulls to "wag the dog" and make it look like they are doing something while they actually do nothing (except break promises)

everything is one big conspiracy theory to you, isn't it?
I don't know how you sleep at night. You must always be awake, worrying about how the government is going to screw you over next.

Meh, government could be doing much better I agree, there's so many different ways things could be streamlined and so on. However you should appreciate what you have, our government, our policies, our judicial system are still hailed as one of the best in the world. Imagine countries like Nigeria or even Iran that are unbelievably oil rich, but have incredibly corrupt governments that steal everything from the people. Yes I know (ad scandal blah blah, it's nothing compared to the corruption of these governments). You have a right to complain, I agree, it's your right as a citizen to question our government, but also remember it's so much worse everywhere else.

That still doesnt excuse them from trying to control our lives. Sadly i feel that we are sliding out of the comfortable life that you just describe mainly because we are all so passive. We let governments get away with SO MUCH now because we don't care. "Don't bother me with that stuff, im too busy driving my SUV to care!" seems to be our slogan.

Well one day we will wake up in the third world and not even realize how we got there. Remember that in 1930s Argentina was the richest country in the world. In 1960s Afghanistan was a robust country that was favoured amongst backpackers for prestine beauty and wealth. These are extreme examples but they do provide warning for smug countries like us to keep our government in check even in the best of times.

So what are you doing about it, other than bitching on a message board and voting PC?

Actually im trying to organize a rally through "mychoice.ca". However my issue goes beyond just smoking which is why im thinking of starting my own organization. I just need a good web designer who will donate some time to the cause.
