n00b MIDI question

hey i just bought a new edirol pcr-50 usb midi keyboard, and am using steinberg cubase with it
i connected it all correctly, and when i open up cubase and add a vst track (say vanguard) how am i supposed to record the music? as far as connections i know for a fact its all correct as manuals stated, because when i press a key on the keyboard, i see the activity light (red light on the STOP/PLAY/TEMPO CONTROL/PLAY controlling toolbar) move up with each key hit, so i kno its receiving a signal...but basically my question is how do i assign an instrument sound to the keys, so i can actually hear something instead of blank signals? |

| there is a little swith there called "enable record" on the right of the screen together with teh VST channel information.. that should be in the color red |
