This was my second consecutive NYE at Guv, and I am pretty sure i made the right choice. Couldn't face what I knew would be a coat-check disaster at Boa (they can't seem to hang coats AND retrieve them (yes, it is a two part process, people), even on a regular night.) And ya gotta love Mark Oliver.

Highlights of the night:
Massive tunes galore from 11:30 until about 1:30. If you like big trance (with or without vocals) you probably sang along with every one (err... or threw your arms up to the ones without words.

Auld Lang Syne at midnight. So many clubs seem to think the countdown is a stupid formailty and they stop playing track one for about 5 seconds before hitting play on track 2. There is something special about having a couple thousand of your friends singing a song with Gaelic lyrics we don't understand at the top of our lungs...

Room to dance. The whole complex was open, so a lot of people wandered, making the Guv a bit more user-friendly than it can be.

Piss-offs
Is anyone else getting really tired of Mark's 1:30am switch to techno every week? I'm not sure if it is designed to scare away the drinkers after last call or the coke freaks who have snorted their last line by then... but that hour and a half of techno crap ruins my buzz and it takes all my will power to push through it, knowing that he will return to trance and Proggy stuff again at around 3:30am.

I will also argue that this isn't directed as an anti-techno diatribe... it just seems like almost everyone in the room either leaves to have a smoke, explore the other rooms, or just stands there waiting patiently for the groove they were feeling to return... (I say almost everyone, because the asian crowd (yes, I am making a huge generalization here... you don't have to point it out), having just finished their last bag of blow are so totally f***ed up, they kinda stagger on the dancefloor with moves that look like an interpretive dance number at Harbourfront Centre... or sit on the speaker stands.

Most of us go there for Mark's incredible ability to spin awesome big-room trance and progressive music that makes that laser seem so cool. breaking this up with techno just messes with my mind. Go harder, go cheesier, but drop the techno from the set-list.

But whining aside. A great night with great friends, and we should once again remind ourselves how lucky we are to have the Guv and Mark Oliver as our favourite playground.

Wow...

Um...I wanna listen to techno...

Another superb NYE...Mark was impecable...

Did anyone notice how he went through a rock remix period...I liked it...When you have an extended set, you can screw around more I guess...

Um...Yah...so because of my exploits last night, I havent slept all day and actually read almost the complete novel, The DiVinci Code...Damn Red Bulls... ;)

but its 1230 now...can't believe I skipped this Spin...But I'm toast...

CU next Sat at the Guv...

Ya, I knew i would piss off a few techno fans. But this is the "tranceaddict" site, so I think it's fair to wear my heart on my sleeve.... and don't you notice a drop in energy on the dancefloor? It can't possibly be all in my (messed-up) mind.

Mark really has been playing a lot of "Rock" remixes lately, and last night he pumped in a few of them. I'm a fan of the "Lithium" Dirty Funker remix he plays, The Teen Spirit version he spins occasionally, etc. I thank Oakenfold, who took rock remixes to a new level with his Beautiful Day 2004 mix that made dreary 102.1 music seem relevant again.

that definatley wasnt techno after 1:30, techno is A LOT harder... he was slow for a couple hours though, i really enjoyed later on, so very well layered, fun too.
prog - trance
DDTT (the good kind)
tech trance,
u name it:tongue2

I'm too hungover to write anything terribly insightful...

thank god for line bypass + leaving coats in car...because at 11:30, the line went around almost the whole side of building and coat check was "temporarily closed" when we got in for some reason (?)

Mark just tore it up...no highlights stand out, although I was pretty trashed...just ~9 hours of great music. I almost feel bad for never having anything to say about this guy's sets...they're just consistently awesome and more fun that at least half of the "big names" who pass through there.

It had also been a while since I'd seen the lights come on at Guv...yikes.

funny meeting this Italian dude right near the end...I think it was his first time there for a resident night...the way he was going on about the music, MO had clearly rocked his world :D

Dan, Chris, Marc, Jay...I don't recall seeing any familiar TA faces, I assume most went to Boa...but was it just me, or did more people than usual seem to have chosen to avoid going out for NYE? Guv was full, but quite roomy by the middle of the night...not that I'm complaining at all...a pleasant surpise :)

9/10

10 if the droning makesmewanttoslitmywristsitssoingboring techno-ish interlude is replaced with some more epic trance...the cheesier the better :p

I got my lessons on the difference between Trance/Prog/Techno from Skipper, so maybe I was either drunk (highly likely) or there is an advanced course on degrees of techno that I skipped out of to go to the mall with my buds.

Either way, I hated it... and he seems to play that same style for 2 hours every week - however we define it.

it was a long night, im not even sure what 2 hours yer talking about cause i sorta lost track of time being there for almost 10 hours lol.
either that or i dont notice cause i like techno.......but there was defintltey 2 hours of slow music where he lost the crowd completley.
but i mighta done the same thing to some degree, you cant play tech-trance for 12 hours straight.
