his turning down of genuine penalty appeals was a disgrace. :whip:
I also remember back in april 2003, horseface dived for a penalty and then hyppia got sent off. :whip:
No wonder almost everyone calls him Mike 'the manc' Riley :haha:
1 and 3 hands down. |

well, our list with him
Sent off 2 bolton players in the first 22mins vs leicester, no real bad tackle in the whole game.
League cup final - conned for penalty, and missed double hit, also admitting he'd not have given it had he seen it, even tho the rulebook says he HAS to have. Then missed blatant handball by ehiogu
vs Man Utd at reebok last year, gave awful lunge by fletcher on gardner as fair tackle, gardner out 4 months with ligament damage
why does he hate us ? well.
back in 99 in playoffs a young referee called Barry Knight ed up playoff semifinal 2nd leg at ipswich, sent 3 bolton men off, gave 3 pens to ipswich allowing them to win 5-3 and go thro to the playoff final. Allardyce reported knight and fa held him back for 2 seasons not allowing him to have any bolton games. Also banned from preston games after similar ups. Turns out Knight's 'mentor' was mike riley, after which we have all those problems.... what a wanker |

I think last year Graham Poll was in charge of the man u vs Liverpool fixture, but then he had an illness, so who do they put in to replace him? Yes thats right Mike Riley. The man that sent off hyppia in the exact same fixture the year earlier, luckily he redeemed himself, by giving Liverpool a rightful penalty.
But now his back in my bad books and alot of others. |

I think he is average. Every ref has made some pretty bad calls in my opinion. Collina calling a penalty for Owen vs Argentina comes to mind. That Danish ref sending Beckham off (what a joke call).
Im not too familiar with his history with Bolton so perhaps there's something there that I don't know about. |

actually beckham tripped Simeone intentionally, right infront of the referee; whether or not Simeone exaggerated, that was a rightful red for Beckham. |

| It wasn't a trip on Simeone, Beckham was lying on his stomach and flicked him with the outside of his foot, it was nothing. Simeone carefully fell down to the floor protesting as he was falling! Beckham got a straight red for that. Simeone, who committed a ridiculous foul on Beckham in the first place, escaped with a yellow and stayed on the pitch. The referee lost control of the game after that. |

actually not so. I was watching soccer extra on sky on sunday there and they had jeff winter on to explain refereing decisions. Apparently if the intent is there, then it's considered as violent conduct - which is a sending off.
There was clearly intent with the beckham incident altho little or no contact was made. |

I think "intent" can be broadly defined. Roy Keane taking a full-blooded elbow swing but completely missing can be considered good intent to cause harm. Classifiying Beckham's pathetic attempt (pathetic in the sense that it was a rather wimpy fling of the leg) to intimidate Simeone as "intent to cause harm" is really, really pushing the defintion. I know this is a tired cliche, but football is a man's game. If Beckham had been sent off for the sadness of his kick that would have been fair enough.
Having said that, I think a more pressing matter than violent conduct in football these days is "simulation". I have seen that video over and over and I am still amazed how Simeone could fall over so dramatically and still keep a straight face to the world the next day. My own grandmother wouldn't have tripped over that.
If the ref was to follow the book strictly word for word than Simeone should have gotten a second yellow card for simulation and sending off along with Beckham. Even then, Beckham could be considered harshly done by. |
