Dust Buildup on Stylus
View this Thread in Original format

I've noticed crazy dust buildup on my stylus when I've been listening to records...why is this happening? Is the weight on the arm to much or what? It really gets irritating when you start to hear really bad crackling on your records.

Thanks for any help

Dust buildup on stylii usually indicates that the stylii are worn out and need to be replaced. That could also be the reason behind the crackling.

Use a needle brush.

Will do, thanks.

It could also be dust on my records as well, because quite a bit of my collection is used, and most of those records had sat in bins for ages before I bought them.

Guess I just need to watch my styli and make sure they stay dust free ^_^

Swiffer cloths work nicely on records if you don't have a specialized record cleaner or anything like that.

also, those clothes used for cleaning glasses work really well.. if they dont scratch glass, i dont think they are going to harm a record :)

Swiffer and other cloth users;
How do you know the chemicals in those don't harm the records?

When cleaning your records arnt you supposed to use an anti static cloth or something?

Ermmmmm, as far as a swiffer dry cloth goes, what chemicals are you referring to?? I looked up the MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheet) for the swiffer dry cloths and they appear to be about as hazardous chemically to your records as your shirt would be. You can check for yourself here.

Yeah, I don't know about using Swiffer cloths, I'd rather buy something made for cleaning records :)

I'm still trying to figure out why my styli pick up so much dust.

They aren't like really expensive carts, cheap Gemini ones, but they should work fine.

I have no idea, lol. Could my cart be on wrong?

swiffers are the best for cleaning records, don't waste money on other so called cleaners and especially gruv glide. use a swiffer and lighter fluid to clean off finger prints and other goo, and use just a plain ole dry swiffer for static problems and dust removal.
