Record Contracts?

Hi,

No idea, if someone has made a thread about this, but I doubt it as I searched for one and couldn't find one.

Anyway, I'm looking for label's or artist's willing to share their record contracts or licensing contracts with me.

Im in the middle of writing my own and I really need to scope around in order to make sure I have everything dealt with.

Once completed, Im willing to share it with any newbies, as I know most new producers have no idea what theyre looking at and unlike alot of labels/artist, i dont give a about it.. and ill share my knowledge like others(some) have shared with me.

If anyone knows anyone with samples or one, you can wipe out the artist and title name and email it to me, it would be great...

[email protected]

email it there for me, thank you and also as I said if anyone needs a final contract, email me later and I'll let you know.

To be quite honest, unless you are a lawyer, you shouldn't write it yourself. Hell I took a couple law classes in college and we went over contracts and I could probably come up with one, but it wouldn't be fool proof. Just a suggestion.

Ops,

I forgot to mention, My uncle is a lawyer and yes will look over my final contract.
I have done commerical/contract law also, but music law is a little different and It's good to get an idea of others contracts to make sure you've included everything.

That's sweet, I used to work with a law firm my freshman year of college so I'm friends with several lawyers. It's always nice to know one. I'll be in your position in coming time. This thread should be informative if you get some responses.:) Good luck.

wtf
xpander.nl is down :(

Sean Cusick wrote a great article on the subject, now it's not an actual contract but he was giving a lot of pointers.

From memory some key issues were:
do not give up your rights, keep a hold on the things that are signed under certain time limitations ( refuse lifetime delivery of the rights ).
sign under an alias
other important things but it's too early and I'm being forgetful.

if xpander comes back up I'll make sure to find the article and post the link.

Make sure your uncle is VERY familiar with entertainment law, cause its a specialized field.

I had a few music marketing and managment courses in my audio engineering class and we read lots of case studies about peple getting screwed cause they used regular lawyers and not entertainment lawyers.

Record contracts are very sticky business. i suggest you read "confessions of a record producer" by moses avalon. its a great book it goes over all the ways a record lable will try to screw you. It even takes a real contract and breaks down every line and translates it from lawyer garbadge talk to english.

Honestly you should just buck up the cash, go see an entertainment lawyer and pay to have a proper contract made. I mean unless you have been doing this for a very long time i dont even see how writing your own contract is even within your grasp.

Mate, we're talking about a dance label here.

Not millions of dollars.

Ive got that book actually & another 3-4 I bought years ago... Great books.

Im just trying to cover all aspects, as I want to be sure.
You'd laugh at some of the contracts Ive seen label's send me or artists send me, Theyre so basic.... they don't cover anything.. my contract is 5-6 pages long.. Ive been involved with this for 5 years now. Im just always checking. I'll be fine.

And yes my uncle has done many different forms of law and he will check final copies.

Tho I think your kidding yourself, so many labels are run by producers who sign friends, by saying Ill give you 50/50.. with no contracts, if any so basic.. so youd be surprised how many labels actually dont fork out thousands to see a lawyer. Weird but true.

Declaration No 3.

In the context of the Agreement between the House and Trance Community and the music Federation on progression in certain trance products signed in Brussels on 9 July 2002, the Parties agree that they shall not apply with respect to the other Party quantitative restrictions, customs duties, charges or any similar measures on the export of sex slave penguins that like a bit of the ole pooper distruction under the EC Combined Nomenclature heading 7204, without prejudice to the provisions of Article 19 of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement, so dont eat that green sausage that smells like a fart.
Without prejudice to paragraph 1, in order not to delay the conclusion of this Agreement and due to lack of buttsecks, the Parties agreed to leave unresolved the issue of the fannyfart introduced by a kinky Russian girl on exports of sex slave penguins that like a bit of the ole pooper distruction under the EC combined Nomenclature 7204. The tax is currently set at 15 % but not less than EUR 15 per ton for all products of 7204, except for product 7204 41 00 where the tax is set at 5 %. Nevertheless, the Parties agree to continue the whinging to find a satisfactory solution as soon as one of them takes it up bum for teh team.
