Popping sounds from records

| I've been recording some mixes and noticing popping sounds during quiet parts...what software do you guys recommend to eliminate this from my wav files? Is there anything out there that works that is free? |

| Most programs have a Normalize command. Soundforge is a great choice, cool edit works well too. |

normalizing has nothing to do with getting rid of the pops and clicks. i know there are some good programs out there that get rid of pops and clicks for soundforge; however, i have no experience with them. i tend to believe that the sound should be left untouched. |

correct. normalizing just equalizes the volume gains. and i'm not sure i'd want to run any filter for record noise, either. i think the noise is part of the fun of using vinyl and i feel like trying to clean up the track will really just degrade from its overall sound quality. |

| Audio Cleaning Lab by Magix has some features like declicker and dehisser that help greatly to cut down on those sounds. Also has a lot of the features of Soundforge. It's not free though, $40 U.S., but that's a pretty good bargain considering the features. |

true, what you hear is what you get. maybe try pinning down a copy of that said track on a digital download site? |

| I would agree that some noise is a part of the music. However, a lot of the time the popping comes from static electricity buildup on the vinyl. I would recommend using a program such as ACID Pro 4.0 or Cubase. Both of them have noise gates and good compression that help out quite a bit. When I recorded my first demo my crappy DJX700 made my mix so noisy I had to master it to make it worth listening to. The other option is to a piece of studio equipment with a noise gate/ limiting/ compression. I've heard behringer has a good one, but like I said above I had a DJX700 and I've leared from my mistake... |

Thanks much for the advice...
could it be that my needle is wearing down? I am new at this and have not had to change my stylus yet, how do you know when it is time to change it? |

| , I said normalize, but I was thinking of the other thing. Now that I give it a proper thought, I don't even know what to call it. Anyway, many programs have the feature that analyze the tracks sound spectrum, and take the noise playing at a part where there is no song, or it's quiet, and remove those frequencies from the rest of the song. That's a simplified explination, anyway. Hope that helped a bit more. |

| I've never been that bothered by the popping...it's just something that happens with vinyl. If you look at some of the earlier GUs like Oakenfold's it says something about how record surface noise was left in the recording at the request of the DJ. |
