10 Percent Rule

| I think there should be a unspoken rule that when you're in the top 10 dj's in the world, you should only be able to play 10 percent of your own producitons. This way dj's will continue to bang out new and better sets instead of relying on their own productions over and over again. What say you? |

I don't know, really. I think trance has become too much of a "who plays the newest tunes"-competition. I think it's good when DJ's play their own tunes.
Of course too much is always too much. |

I agree with you 100 percent. It is unfortunate that it's turned into that. I wish is that these dj's would return to their roots and think about why they got into dj'ing in the first place. Then maybe we would get more emotion and track selection in their sets.
I don't want to rip on Tiesto since he's the one who got my attention toward trance, but his set on Christmas was pretty solid without his new productions. I LOVE hearing top dj's playing other people's stuff more than there own. It brings them back down to the humble plane of being a normal non-glorified dj whose still loves to rip great sets and get the crowd pumping. |

Funnily enough, noone complained when PvD played Columbia, We Are Alive and Tell Me Why (after playing it once already) in a row several dozen times in 99-2000. But now? |

| if i was a producer id play mostly my own stuff out, or at least my remixes of other poples tunes. thats what the people came to see you for. not to hear you play what everyone else is playing. plus the stuff you produce should be pretty much the stuff you will want to play out. |

| This is why PvD's set on NYE was simply amazing. He went back to some of his "good times, great oldies". |

..and no one complained when PvD opened and ended half of his sets with some remix of Nothing but You, but meh.
If I was a smalltime dj I think I would produce a load of songs and play them out all the time since 1. you don't get all the brand new tunes and 2. it's a good way to start getting your name out there. Productions just show the versatility of a DJ, imo. |
