Okay.......
well...........
it's been 5 years @ guv right?
there's been some crazy celebratin'....ie. tiesto, and beautiful set spun by mark oliver for the 5 year party......
I wen't to guv this saturday.......other than vaiio-rapture, not one in trance song....and a lot of darker stuff
now let me think......
while I was attempting to come to terms with this; I realized; that my balls were rolling over each other's sweat- cause guv obviously is not willing to cool the place down;
and then I looked around realized that the crowd was 85% male; and then I realized that of the 15% female population; only 1% were single, and of that one percent half were too sketched out to realize that we speak the same language......so that leaves us with what;
one half a percent of what 3000 people, anyways......none of this would matter a) if the in music was decent b) if the in music was decent (repeated on purpose).....
so my question is......
what exactly is the guv celebrating? still being open (not easy for clubs)
considering that the beautiful vibe of the 5 year anniv.party, and the tiesto show; are nowhere near represented on the normal saturday night........
I'm tired, and concerned, and seriously considering not going there anymore.......
mark oliver.......what have you done.......
but more importantly; can somebody tell me where we are going?

Well there's no argument that the Guvernment you see today is not the same Guv of late 1998/early 1999... In the latter half of 1998 the Orange Room used to be a great place to party on Sunday nights, the vibe was there and the music was great..
Eventually the main room of Guv started to become more "rave" oriented (yea I know I hate to use that word but work with me here) as glowsticks started being seen and other "rave culture" associated activities. I remember it was a relatively small group on the back stage and every week it was practically the same people who were there - but slowly they'd bring friends and I met a load of people this way...
Before you knew it the main floor of the guv was a great party as well.. I remember going there practically every Saturday between March 1999 and August 1999.... After about April 2000 Oliver started playing more progressive music and trance was no where to be seen... He's the DJ he can play what he wants - whether the difference in the crowd can be attributed to the different music he plays is debatable - it may have just been a coincidence, who knows?
Keep in mind that a lot of people who got into it in 1999 when 'Epic' Trance was riding the wave of popularity got into it for that very reason... Over the years their appreciation of the music dwindled as it's 'popularity/trendy' factor decreased - these were not true 'trance addicts' but rather clubbers who were adapting to the trendy genre at the time and have since moved on to something else.
In the other threads some of you whine about women not being at these events and what not, well think about this -- I'm sure you'll all agree with me that those 'gino' clubs that play a lot of different styles of music (most of which the majority of us here don't really like, it seems) manage to pack in quite a number of hot looking women. Why the dichotomy? Well, I was going to these places many years ago and still do once in a while, and I can say this - the vast majority of the time the 'party vibe' is a lot more evident there - you see more people smiling and having a good time - even if the music is a tad bit 'cheesy' at times. At a lot of clubs these days (which will remain nameless) the music they play may be awesome but sometimes looking around at the crowd is just a scary reality check. Sketched-out individuals who go overboard with their drug use and other shady characters aren't appealing to look at. Why would all those women you so desire come into such an environment unless they were a) accustomed to it already or b) had friends (like us) who brought them out to see that it isn't always like that?
Tiesto in Toronto was great crowd-wise, argubly not as musically informed as the crowd that came out to see Paul Van Dyk but nonetheless more of a 'party' crowd than PVD. (at least from what I saw...) There were of course a lot more women at this event than at PVD, coincidence? Doubtful. |

| I was at Guv saturday nite and I didn't really mind the crowd or the music. Let's face it ppl, there are not many DJ's who are spinning true epic trance. Whether you think that DJ's jumping on the progressive band wagon is an attempt to copy true progressive pioneers like Sasha and Digweed or Warren not is irrelevant because progressive trance seems to be what is working in clubs these days. I didn't think that Olivers set was bad, although he did drop House, Tech-Trance and Trance tunes that nite. Regarding women at Guv, let's just say that TO is seriously lacking women who love Trance music. I don't know why this is the case because mostly every other country will probably have an equal number of women who dig trance, but for some reason the ratio in TO is smaller. Still personally I don't go to clubs to pick up women, if I wanna do that I'd rather go to a bar or a hip hop party where my chances of scoring would be much higher. Still it is a pity that the only chicks that I saw at Guv last sat were either Gino girls who were there to be seen and probably didn't care what the was playing or chicks who were doing some kinda drug. Where are all the women who love the music ??? |

You can't always get what you want.

| I agree with you guys that Guvernment is just awful. I started going there in the begining of 2000, and it looks like I just caught the tail end of the "trance wave". As far as the crowds, I don't mind them too much, I actually know a lot of the "big shirtless ginos" as you guys call them and they are not all so bad. Unfortunately, there are too many people who go there just to get high, just take a look at the crowds glued on to the speakers all night in a semi-conscious state. As far as girls, definitively a lack of them at the Guv., but there are still quite a few nice ones at "The Drink". Anyways, its nice to see hot girls, but picking them up is not my priority, after all I don't want a green discharge to go along with my green glowsticks. Consequently, it all comes down to one thing, and that is the horrible music that Mark Oliver seems to love to punish us with. Like one of the bouncer there told me when I asked him about his take on the music; "Man, I don't hear any music here, its all just a one long annoying song from start to finish". |

Well, I guess I am gonna be one of the people that are gonna quit the GUV after seeing and hearing Ferry, Tiesto and PVD in there...
Why should I bother spending $15 every saturday hoping that Mark Oliver won't have another deep progressive house set and will actually play some trance/progressive hits?! I can wait a month or two and spend that money on a ticket for Tiesto, PVD or any other decent trance Dj from Europe that might come by, since they are more likely to satisfy my trance addiction...
Even progressive beats that Tiesto played in the last couple of sets I downloaded were more energetic and hype than the e Mark plays in the GUV... His set this saturday was nothing special, except maybe for 2-3 songs that really got me going, and the last song of the nite --> Brainbug - Nightmare. And he doesn't even bother playing those hype tracks he used to play a few months ago? Everything is just going more deep, tribal and more progressive, without much energy in it. No wonder most of the girls in there (out of those 15%) were there either for the show off or on drugs, since there is no other en way you can spend the whole night in that place with that kind of music.
, now that I think about it, I was rarely able to spend the night in there without any drugs or *illegal substances*, unless Mark threw in some hype tracks, which was rare... and the crowd in that place is just getting worse and worse! 50% of the people on the dance podium (the middle) are on en drugs, standing in one spot, staring at the ceiling/floor, or just plain sitting on the floor tripping out,... e, that's not the type of people I wanna see around me in a club.
And I thought the crowd at Tiesto was way better than any crowd I've seen in the GUV for the last 2-3 months, even tho there were many ginos and people who had no clue who Dj Tiesto was, but the energy (the magic ingredient I am looking for) was way up there!
And I guess I should save myself for the events like that... events that are worth my time, money and Saturday nights.
[Now, that is just my opinion, and I could be wrong] |

And in regards to that first post, about the Vaiio - Rapture, that song is starting to piss me off now, for some reason... or is it just that I've heard the Deep Dish and John Creamer's remixes too many times that it is annoying!
I also remember hearing "DHS - House of God" being mixed in with "Katana - Fancy Fair", (not 100% sure), but whatever it was, it was great! Props to Mark for pulling that off, and the Brainbug at the end... other than that, it was e... bunch of so-and-so trance/house/progressive tracks.
Damn, can't wait for AVB and his remix of Rapture... |

Hmmm, well put Swamper, I think your point got lost tho by reading other threads. I really enjoyed your "lack of women" argument. Interesting, and I agree with you, a great example of this is women who dance to hip hop at clubs.
Being a dj (or trying to be anyways) I've noticed my taste in trance changing very fast. The last 5 vinyl I bought were all prog. I don't really think Oliver is jumping on any bandwagon, but really just picking up what the scene is offering nowadays. Don't get me wrong boys, I love Dumonde as much as the next guy, but those epic trance days aren't what they used to be.
Many argue that Oliver is Canadas top DJ, and quite frankly I love prog. An acquired taste no doubt, but I say keep banging the tunes Mark. Trance will always be the original genre, ALWAYS. The words trance and party will always go together.
Guv knows what it is doing. We have to quit bitchin, support the scene. And btw STATE in 2 WEEKS! ahhh. AVB AVB AVB AVB AVB

thanks everyone......I feel a little better, and more informed.
anyways......with regard to this whole epic trance term.....I don't like it........would you call tiesto's set @ kool haus epic....nope just good kickin.....beautiful trance......with a hard bassline....right.....anyways......I believe we should be able to have this type of feel...at a club like guvernment (except cleaner, cooler, and less sketchy) on a regular basis....don't you agree?
a place where people look you in the eye, and the vibe is happy...with a minory of skethpads acceptable as a by-product of somethin' way bigger than drugs or chicks.....or anything........
I was merely refering to the chick thang.......in the sense of how unnatural it is.............and I don't want to flog a dead horse.
anyways.........
just dying now for AVB.........except....I'm afraid that afterwards.....I'll be right here again......missin' it......and having nowhere to turn for a tranceaddicts fix........
