Djing with RnB as opposed to trance

Hello TAs,
Guys, I've scored my first Djing Gig.
I'm proficient at trance. My mates say I can Dj really well with that, especially considering i've never learnt off anyone.
Problem is but, I've been asked to do an RnB session for about an hour first. I'm having lot of trouble DJing with RnB.
Does anyone have any advice or tips for me in this gig? I've been practicing, and am improving, but what should I be aiming for. I mean, for starters, Beat Matching is only really possible for like 50% of switching between tracks.
Thanks,
Abhay |

Well, if you don't play any RnB, then why did you take the gig in the first place?
Anyhow, just play some well known-tracks, and speed it up a little towards the end. If you can not beatmatch the tracks, just try to make them flow as good as you can. Try to pick similar beats and sounds, and build on from that.
Make sure to switch between rap/singing. Play a few hip-hop tracks, and some more soulful r&b.
House Of Pain - Jump Around always works, even for trance-crowds ;).
And oh yeah: make sure you HAVE any RnB... :p |

| when the chorus hits for the song that is playing. that is when youmix in the 2nd song from the beginning and when the chorus is done thats when you should fade out. |

to DJ with RnB is a bit tough, but just fade when the song is about to end, thats what most hip-hop and rnb djs do |

Don't complicate yourself, most DJs who play hip-hop, RnB, or rap suck anyways. They don't beatmatch or do proper fade outs.
You, on the other hand, know how to beatmatch and do proper fade outs (I hope :happy2: ), so my advice is to just practice your set first to see which tracks can be beatmatched and which ones can't. Build your set based on this, and hopefully someone will notice that you actually have the skills to play any set properly. ;) |

haha, oh god, you people dont seem to understand that dj wise the best hiphop djs own the best trance djs by about 6 million light years
anywho
scratch a bit, dont worry to much about beatmixing, get em as close as you can then drop in the new track.
Oh and play some house in between the rnb/hip hop and trance, or everyone will dissapear real quick. |

| do you have to play ALL R&B or some hip hop as well ? spinning these 2 genres work well together.. bpm will be around 90 give or take... beatmach records that has a kick intro n outros... but sometimes you'd just want to cut it, and not mix it in.. for some records with great acapella intros or 'open' sounds, its more effective when cutting it. anyway good luck. |

Getting the hang of it.
The best thing I've found to, that I think would impresss, is to isolate the vocals (I use a laptop), keep looping them in a sensical way (Like CHingy's familiar Oh... Oh ... Ohhh), and have it carry over into the next tracks, and bring it up here and there, as an extra layer on teh next track....
I can play pretty much both RnB and Hip Hop. At the end of a track, i reverse it, or start scratching, and fade into the next track....
I don't need to practice the Trance ;) .... but that will definately be the best part of my performance there.:happy2:
the crowd will be 50% hip-hop/RnB and 50% Trance/House.
I've been asked to do one hour of RnB first, then can do whatever (trance.... duhhhh....)
what s me off is that becasue I'm using a laptop, I need to get another soundcard, before I can get a set of headphones to hook up, which would let me here the track I'm about to fade into, and let me get it in the right spot :whip: |
