Hey everyone!

After such a great response to my thread on Tranqulity Base - Surrender, I'm moving onwards and upwardas to Basslines.

Now the sound that I really like is the pulsing bass such as that in this track.

Can anybody give me any help at all as to how I can make a bassline such as this in Cubase SX2?

From what I can gather, the pulsing effect seems to come from a sidechain comprssor (is that right?) or can this type of effect be created in a different means?

I really have no clue as to how to desvribe the sound that I'm looking for, so I've included a sample below with it in:

Sample

I've had a good search throught he forum but couldn't see any little tutorials or whatever, so thought I'd brave it for my second post in these parts lol!

it aint so hard as u described it
ReFx's JunoX 2 can make the work perfect with some compression and EQ on the bass in this case a lowpass EQ and of course adds a med-reverb and light chorus should make the work tuogh...even FLStudio's Pure Basslines

Are you sure you don't mean the arpy/sweeping lead in the background, as the actual bassline is simply a standard off beat bassline.

Anyway, the LEAD is achieved by playing the given notes(get a midi), and then having the LFO destination set to the filter. That effect is commonly known as "sweeping" :gsmile:

Oh right I see!

I dont mind you guys telling me its easier than I thought, I can handle that lol!!

I'll try and hunt down a demo ReFx's JunoX 2 and have a play with that methinks.

Rob, is it possible to do what you said in Cubase SX2? If so, any chance you (or anyone lol)could give me a quick walkthrough on how?

I'm a newb but I'm willing to learn!

???? Isnt this just a simple offbeat "oompa oompa" one-layer bassline with two oscs slightly fm'ed???
satchboy69
Quite possibly is bud, I'm just really new at this lol

Well I doubt it's the bassline he's reffering to. Cut everything below 800hz, and if it's still there, it's not the bassline.;)

And I'll see if I can re-create the lead synths tommorow(to the best of my ability at least:nervous: ). It won't be as easy as that zero-7 clap tho:stongue:
Subtle
I noticed the bass is playing 1/8 notes instead of a usuall 1/16

Hey everybody,

All good advice so far and an interesting little session going on.

But it's come to my attention that I posted a really poor sample, so I've picked a better part of the track where the bass is more audible.

You can grab the new sample here:

Ok, whats everybody think now?

Sounds like there is two basses. A mid and a sub. The sub is a simple off beat bassline, the mid bass is just a saw bass, no sustain, low decay, with some short delay on it. I guess that what you mean by 'pulsing'. Take your bassline, and toss a delay on it, and play with the settings, I believe you'll start to find what you're looking for.
