What do you do with the dirt on your records?

  • 1. I am going crazy because of the dirt on my records.
When I try to clean my record with my t-shirt, I can see how the dust is falling back on the record (I guess because of static energy) . So I am worried about my records. Is it bad for the vinyls, when you play them with the dust on the surface?
  • 2. Please somebody can give me a name of a product (clout or something), which is good for the dust on the records? I know some of them are available at Chemical Records for example, but dunno which to use. So I want to ask somebody who has experience with this kind of product and can give me a feedback.

Thank you people! :toocool:

Well, to wipe dust off I just have a swiffer dry cloth on hand and right when I set the record on the TT I give it a quick wipe (usually). For cleaning I use alcohol (100% isopropyl) and distilled water in a 20% mix. Works like a charm for me.

P.S. - you moved your thread in the middle of my reply.

Lol sorry, but I realised after posting that I posted in wrong forum.

actually the stanton vinyl cleaning kit (the little wiper tool and cleaning solution) works very well. I reccomend it.

i also use the stanton cleaning kit with the velvet wiper thing, i rarely even use the chemicals, usually a quick wipe with the tool, then a wipe of the tool onto my shirt or whatever to keep the tool as clean as possible (being that i use it on every record before playing) because dust is an inevitability with home/basement dj's. i dont know of any long term effects of not keeping your vinyl clean... besides physically or somehow chemically altering the record surface but i dont see that really happeneing under normal circumstances.

I use the same wiper thing. Works pretty good. Where does all the dust come from? (I sound like my mom) :stongue:

Mostly you. Alot of dust is dead skin cells and hair that we continually shed. Then you have dust you bring from out side and lint off your clothing and there you go.

I spray the dirt with gruv glide then wipe it clean with the cleaning pads that it came with.

One of the best and cheapest options for cleaning your records with is lighter fluid. Put it on a soft cloth and wipe it down.

I was using lighter fluid but it didn't seem to get rid of the static nearly as good as Gruv Glide... Just personal experiance here, maybe I didn't do it right, I'm sure you have quite a few years on me DJ wise ;)

I haven't cleaned my records in a long while. I've noticed some sound decrase on some of my older records, as in I have to adjust the gain quite alot to compensate for this when I mix. Do dirty dirty records tend to be quieter?:conf:

+1

Use Gruv Glide to clean your records and nothing else. Gruv Glive wont leave a film on your record or any chemicals which can eat away at the vinyl grooves over time. Gruv Glide will remove the dirt, remove fingerprints, destatictize, and overall improve the fidelity of your records.

For more info go here: http://www.gruvglide.com/

I would recommend purchasing the product at Guitar Center if you live in the states as they seem to have the fairest price.
