Hellooooooooooooooooooo,
been quite a while since I posted here, I hope everybody is ok and healthy.
Listen, I need some help deciding which way to go for live sets. I have quite a couple of good opportunities to do live sets, so not mixing, but bringing my tracks live. So , I wanne do it of course. I've been working my ass off to save up some cash to buy the needed gear. Now that I'm almost there it's time to decide WHAT I do ;(
The obvious choice is to get a laptop, put live on it, and mess around with that and my synth on stage. But honestly, I don't like that, I don't want to stand on a stage with a laptop, my personal choice.
So I've been looking around, and I notice some guys have definately been performing without a laptop ! But what gear do those guys use, I'm clueless. Anyone seen that latest clip from Jay-Z vs Linkin Park ?
I was thinking, I need my synth and perhaps a midi controlling keyboard. Then some kind of hardware sampler that is able to sample a descent amount of stuff (like 20 or 30 second loops, whatever). Do I need a mixer ? If so, can I get away with a simple DJ-type mixer, or do I need to get me a Mackie .. because that's no longer in my budget :( I use several instruments, like electrical guitars and stuff like that, the actual instrument, I need a mixer I guess to use that baby ? If so, and that's the only stuff I need a mixer for, I'll sample my guitar at home, though I'd rather play live on it.
The speakers will always be available, so I do not need those.
Try to keep in mind it's a lot to carry around, so I'm looking for a compact setup. I don't need no life remixing, I'm bringing my songs, I'm not gonne mix Britney Spears getting off on Madonna in between or anything like that ;)
As always, I salute you !
Thank you. |

What I'm trying to do is to play alive is (when I finish my +/-10 tracks):
Mix everything, put all effects, compressor, mastering, etc... But removing my "live" channel (the one I'll play live with my nord lead 3).
The other channels (drums, pads, fx, etc) will be already mastered, so I can have some loops like you said (30 or 40 seconds).
All samples will go on an Hardware Sampler (an Akai one) wich I don't have yet.
And to sequence everything I will need an midi player who will be able to play the little samples, loop they until I want to go to next midi loop on the row (what product do this? Roland Grooveboxes??)
Another option is replace the hardware sampler and sequencer with my notebook, but hardware sampler and sequencer is better, more estable and less expensive (if the notebook isn't too expensive, mine is). |

| Yes, I've already check the Ableton Live and it does what i want, but I'm considering creating the loops on Cubase... |

| BT and Sasha are starting to use live in conjunction with reason and some vsti's and a usb keyboard and adding live things on the keyboard as well as playing around with samples in live. |

| Laptop stuff just gets waaay to expensive for me. I need to get a good laptop for audio stuff, let's go for about €1500, then a good or great external soundcard obviously, that will beat you to another couple of hundreds, then ableton live, I don't even wanne think about the price of that. While now all I would need is like the other guy, a midi keyboard (you get a good one for as little as 100$, that's €80 or something) and a good sampler thingy, I heared the MPC series are great for what I (and luiz apparently) need. And then there's my taste where I don't like to watch an act where the laptop is the center of it all (personal preference), so I'll be damned if I do it myself. MPC 2000XL is the sh!t, but it offers an entire Cubase system along with it, and I don't need that, so I'll keep looking for other stuff. |

If you have your material, then I would say that a live performance would be better if you’re more interactive with the audience. That means bring the guitar, a control surface, and midi controllers. Otherwise you’re just a DJ playing your own music. Yes. It may be allot to carry. Now is where you find out who your friends are. If you plan on doing gigs on an ongoing basis, investing in carrying cases for your equipment would be good as well.
Keep in mind that desktops are cheaper than laptops, can be upgraded, and take more of a beating on the road than a laptop would. The environment may be damp or filled with smoke. Either way, you can do regular maintenance on the desktops easier than a laptop.
Good luck!

| Yeah of course I'm bringing my guitar hehe :) I'm crossposting this topic on another forum, apparently I didn't mention the guitars here. I'm not just gone play samples, so I got my guitar along aswel, my main tool :) In the future my brother would like to do a bit of percussion I think, so I think I need to keep in mind that that is going to join me in the future (miking the percs or something). But with an MPC-like thing I can go a long way. It's just that one MPC costs around 1K EUro, was hoping it would be less :( |

A buddy of mine plays all his stuff live. No laptop but he has 2 electribes, a big sampler(forget the brand), and a sweet kaoss pad.
You can use one of the electribes to send patterns to say a virus or so, sounds pretty kewl, done that b4 |

| hi if u cut ur tracks down to the bear essentuals(kick base hats an more NB the breaks inbetween which you wd have to full) then u can mix them off cdj an add the live stuff in .. i do this using reason 2.5 an a midi controller . But look out for reason 3 ! from wot ive read they have added more features geared 2wards live playing and ive even heard stories about midi OUT !!! so ure looking at a few cd's instead of a sampler + a pc + ur fave synth an a midi controller...... OH an LOTS of practice... |
