7/8 timing

i've been trying to find a layout for 7/8 timing but can't find it anywhere.

any suggestions, and/or does anyone know how to construct one?

i am not sure what you mean by layout. a 7/8 timing will sound similar to 8/8 but the last note is cut out and a new pattern starts. it sounds kind of abrupt and rough if not done correctly. the format for a 7/8 time signature is as follows: xxxxxxx|xxxxxxx| and so on. the drum pattern should also begin on each new x begining or else the melody and drums will not be in sync. i know that wasn't the clearest of explanations, but it's hard to explain.

The key to keeping rhythms like 5/4 or 7/8 in feel is not as tricky as it may sound. When done correctly it should sound like the new standard tempo (opposed to 4/4). The trick is to spit it up into it's smaller divisions of 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4, or 2/2, 2/3, and 3/2.

For 7/8, make the feel be a 3/4 measure and then a 4/4 measure within one measure, or maybe a 4/4 measure and then a 3/4 measure. Keep one loop pattern specific to the 7/8 pattern, which means that it repeats itself only after 7 beats (this could be a cowbell or something). Then, keep the basis of 4 time lurking underneath. I think the biggest misconception about 'odd' time signatures is that they are 1 specific time signature; in reality, you have to break it all down.

Hope you understand :)

If you want everything in 7/8:get a proper software package like cubase, or logic
Change the time sig on the main arrange window to 7/8 and there you go.
If its just one part, then do the same, then copy that part to a fresh window with whatever other timing you are using.

Dont overuse it- has great impact in the right place. Loads of thrash bands use this- metallica being the most prominent (master of puppets springs to mind) and some latin music.

p.s- Djs will hate you for doing a tune in 7/8 and you may get some odd looks from the floor- to many it will appear to be skipping a beat and it will upset their dancing rhythm and the flow.

I myself would not use it in dance music just because it becomes really hard to mix and as said above people on the floor might not appreciate it. If you're just making listening music thats cool but it is hard to dance to that rhythm.

i agree, but i'd just do whatever you want
just look at shpongle :p
in one song, forget which, they switch to 3|3 in the middle of a song, then back to 4|4 but double time

For trance, I agree with you State of matter, but I thought he was just asking a completely general music question... that type of rhythm could be danced to salsa-style :)

i just watched the drummer's 2004 national conference video and this one guy was completely amazing, and he showed the audience more than anything about experimenting with "odd" time sigs. 7/8 was one. He also played a 5/4 on his left foot, a 4/4 on his right foot, a 3/2 with his right hand, and a 7/8 with his left hand ALL AT ONCE... it made for the most interesting percussion I've ever seen. The man is amazing, and his message was "don't ever do this in a band situation. sure, it's cool for solos and such, but the band will give you weird looks, trust me on that one..."

Same applies to trance... don't do anything unmixable.
