The American investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has claimed that US commandos are operating inside Iran selecting sites for future air strikes. In the latest edition of the New Yorker, Hersh says intelligence officials have revealed that Iran is the US' "next strategic target".
Hersh says that American special forces have conducted reconnaissance missions inside Iran for six months.
Potential targets include nuclear sites and missile installations, he says.
They have been aided by information from the government of Pakistan, Hersh adds.
He reports as well that American special forces units have been authorised to conduct covert operations in as many as 10 nations in the Middle East and South Asia.
'Riddled with inaccuracies'
Hersh bases his claims on anonymous sources, including former intelligence officials and consultants with links to the Pentagon.
One such consultant is quoted as saying that the civilians in the Pentagon wanted to go into Iran and destroy as much of the military infrastructure as possible.
The article has already drawn fire from the White House: the communications director, Dan Bartlett, called it "riddled with inaccuracies".
"I don't believe that some of the conclusions he's drawing are based on fact," Mr Bartlett added.
Hersh could be wrong. But he has a series of scoops to his name, including the details of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal last year.
His track record suggests that he should be taken seriously.

I hope the rest of the world realizes that President Bush just seems to be warming up, brushing off the proverbial dust. He has grand visions of liberating distant, foreign lands from its corrupt and maniacal regimes, to be replaced by a “democratically-elected” government (or perhaps a government loyal to the US if you’re a member of the President’s Cabinet).
Operation Iraqi Freedom is turning out to be an exceptional training opportunity for the US troops on the other side of the planet; making the US the only major power in the world to have participated in and grown experience from a war fought on today’s technologies, a 21st century war. And apparently, if this article is correct, another opportunity to liberate the mistreated peoples of a foreign country may present itself in Iran, who happens to lay between two US occupied countries.
So, I’m I smoking too much and feel President Bush seems to want more than just a democratized Iraq or is my cynical nature proving to prevent me from seeing this more impartially?

Iran has been mention'd for years and years. The US has tried to influence their parliament for every major oil issue in the world. They think Iran & Siberia are two of the last great oil reserves. Who has Siberia almost been taken over by ? Chinese immagrants(read the numbers...) and who wants the other great oil reserve? The U.S.

we studied this in my geology class. was insane.

Not surprising. We essentially ran out all the countries that were doing "illegal" business in Iraq, when we invaded the country and removed Saddam from power. The new Iraqi government will undoubtedly be a loyal provider of crude oil for the country that established its power and upgraded and improved its oil processing capabilities.
These last great oil reserves are of great importance, especially since more economical, feasible alternative engery sources will not be available for at least another 20+ years. These oil reserves will provide the crucially necessary fuel needed to carry on production until these alternative engery sources present themselves as more cost effective.

If i had special forces commandos i would take over Jamacia. I mean if we are going to take over something i would say we do something worthwhile.
