cool stuff tho...not sure what's in the emirates other than oil however, it seems they are making it into a playground for rich westerners primarily.

The Emirates is the halfway point for the western world and the far east. It's become a center for meetings between major world corporations from the east and the west. It's conveniently located and it's relatively lax trade laws make it the new Hong Kong. It's unreal how much money flowed through Dubai, and it's unbelievable how much they're reinvesting to make sure it stays as one of the leading commercial center of the world. Their new building (the burj) is almost 1000 feet higher than the Freedom Tower that is proposed for the WTC site in NYC.

Exactly, the YYZ-DXB route is still in the works, but currently neither YYZ or DXB are nig enough to handle these behemoths.

BUT.. luckily DXB is expanding.. a 'small' cost of $2,500,000,000 USD \o/

DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TERMIAL, CONCORSE AND MUCH MORE AT DUBAI AIRPORT.

Construction work for Terminal 3, concourse 2 and concourse 3 is scheduled for completion by 2006
Cost: $2.5 billion
Up to: 60 million passengers a year

CONCOURSE 2
Directly connected to Terminal 3, Concourse 2 is dedicated exclusively to Emirates. The building will include a multi-level structure for departures and arrivals at Dubai Airport incorporating 27 contact gates and 59 passenger-loading bridges. Additionally, there will be a direct connection to Sheikh Rashid Terminal located at the control tower structure. There is also a 300-room hotel and health club that will include both five and three star rooms. A further 10,000mē of commercial space will be home to Dubai Duty Free and restaurants. Concourse 2 will include five aerobridges capable of handling the new Airbus A380 Super Jumbo. The two concourse buildings will be linked via this airbus, enabling transiting passengers to move freely between the two buildings.

CONCOURSE 3
The third concourse has been included in the expansion programme to accommodate the increased number of passengers at Dubai Airport from the new A380 Super Jumbo.

Concourse 3 will be a scaled-down version of Concourse 2, incorporating climate-controlled lounges. It will have 27 contact gates; 12 gates will be for the A380. The two concourses will be connected via electric buses.

BUT

Dubai also needs a second airport along with 850 buildings!!

Here's a thread with more info (although it does turn into a VERY nasty flame war):

LoL...that's what I said, that guy's dubai-crazy....either way, all that madness of development they have there, i really don't think they'll be able to sustain it - not trying to piss on anyone's parade or anything but it's like the tech bubble - but who knows.
AwakenedAddict
The emerging Dubai construction/banking/commercial boom is quite different than the "tech bubble" of Silicon Valley... there is really no comparison
malek
there's no doubt that they can build all those buildings and 10 times more... but they need companies and people to fill them.

Since you can't become a citizen, who's really intrested in moving in that place?? Going thru the hassle of renewing your resedency papers every 6 months? no thanks.

Well, very few cities are lucky enough to have the amount of capital to start a proper cosmopolitan city. The last city that came even close was NYC. (Recall back in the 30's the two tallest buildings in the world were both in the NYC). NYC was affected by all the major wars, many recessions and massive infrastructure loss.. and they're fine.

And yes DJ El Kay Dee, Abu Dhabi is much cooler ;).. because they are going to undergo a construction boom even bigger than Dubai's! As a matter of fact it has already started, check out this $9,500,000,000 USD development on Abu Dhabi's offshore.
