yeah i noticed it on the trailer the other day. it was also in The OC sometime last season, but so were a few popular 'indie'-ish type songs.
i like it. probably the best song off of 'O', which i've also had since around june or so, and noticed since..earlier.

and so it is
just like you said it would be
life goes easy on me
.most of the time
and so it is
the shorter story
no love no glory
no hero in her skies
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes..
and so it is
just like you said it should be
we'll both forget the breeze
.most of the time
and so it is
the colder water
the blower's daughter
the pupil in denial
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes...eyes...
ohh, did I say that I loathe you?
did I say that I want to leave it all behind..
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind..
my mind..my mind..
til I find somebody new..

god i love damien rice. undoubtedly one of his best songs...
"i cant take my mind off of you"
he makes that line so powerful and heartbreaking...
by MusicOfSilence on 04-15-2004 @ 05:29:50 AM
Such a powerful song. This is the one that had me in tears when I saw him perform it live.
I feel like it's stripping all the dramatics away from love and distilling it into it's most essential elements until one is powerless but to just drink in the object of affection...regardless of whether it is his own to have or not. It just is a pure need.
by cookie_lauren2 on 05-06-2004 @ 01:30:54 PM
well i dont no what to say bout it really apart from its mr rice showing is amazing talent once again
by whiskeyfairy on 06-27-2004 @ 02:28:00 AM

"ohh, did I say that I loathe you?
did I say that I want to leave it all behind..
I can't take my mind off of you"
Such amazing lines. Feeling that strong for someone, but knowing that there are stronger, deeper feelings that no matter how much you want to hate someone, you know you never will. Rice is amazing in so many ways.

And I HAVE to say the lines, 'did I say that I loathe you, did I say that I want to leave it all behind', mean so much. It's the raw essentials of an infatuation, yet an inner voice screaming that you despise them, are repulsed by them and want to leave, yet a stronger voice is crying 'I can't take my mind off you'.
by Scottish_mic on 11-03-2004 @ 09:37:59 PM
it's a fantastic song, someone is infactuated by this person and cant stop thinking about them, even after some sort of trouble. it's a love story that has turned into a love that wont work and has to be left in the past - at a struggle
by yrm8k8 on 11-03-2004 @ 11:35:15 PM
I unfortunately have never seen damien rice live but this song has me in floods of tears everytime i here it. It brings back so many memories. It reminds me of so many people I've left behind and want back.
by pixelgirl_ on 11-15-2004 @ 10:37:22 PM
what/who is the blowers daughter?
by desertrose on 11-25-2004 @ 04:36:54 AM
perfect.
by em_fatale on 11-27-2004 @ 01:45:26 PM
this song is legendary! must see him live one day... i think i'd be in tears the whole way through, though.
this song is so beautiful & also extremely true.
the last line just shows the truthfulness, as we all hav times where we are totally infatuated with someone, but then when someone new comes along it all changes. there is no "we'll be together forever" nonsense. it's pure & true.
by Eggos=yum on 11-28-2004 @ 11:42:14 PM
The blowers daugheter is the glass blower's daughter, a girl the he is obsessed with. He's in love with someone who is to jaded for love...or so he thinks...he just never asked her if she cared for him so he never knew.
by Eggos=yum on 11-30-2004 @ 05:49:07 PM
ok maybe not the glass blower daughter.. but the wind blowers daughter...and winds come and go so is the metaphor...
by Sleepwalking on 12-06-2004 @ 10:47:09 PM
The Blower's Daughter is Damien's old clarinet teacher's daughter, who he was infactuated with etc. But it think it also refers to one of the many meanings of 'O' which is a beach near where Damien lived that is apparantly where 'O' makes perfect sense to him, this beach is included in the Blowers Daughter video and references of 'breeze' 'colder water' link to this. 'I can't take my eyes/mind off you' are 2 very simplistic lines but the delivery is fantastic, the voice, the guitar, the strings, its immense.
Brilliant song, the best on the album!
by SageLFN on 12-06-2004 @ 11:39:57 PM
god his voice is incredible! "the pupil in denial"
MusicOfSilence- 100% agree
after seeing "Closer" I'm glad they used this song, it fits perfectly
by brownplayboy310 on 12-07-2004 @ 12:22:59 AM
I just got done watching closer and had to download this song. I could have swore though that the girls voice said "did i say that i love you" instead of "loathe you". It works better the way it is written here though. I just thought that it was interesting that he had another vocalist sing that part. Everything he says is from a standpoint of enfatuation, but when the girls voice chimes in two say those two lines it's like another part of his brain telling him how much he hates her... like in a breakup when you are still in love with someone but you hate them at the same time.
by ktk on 12-07-2004 @ 10:12:18 AM
im glad someone finally mentioned the inclusion of this song in Closer. this movie will definately do wonders for damian rice. this song was the most perfect song to be shown along with Natalie Portman, as it's quite, quite hard to take one's mind off of her ... she's mesmorizing
by Aliel on 12-09-2004 @ 07:51:52 PM
It is being addicted and completely infatuated with someone, but not knowing how to let go. Being in a trance of fascination… being pulled in and wanting to get out, but not knowing how. It’s about not having control over the situation, but wanting to gain control so badly because it’s taking over and you're sick of being so infatuated because it hurts too much...
by aftonbelle on 12-12-2004 @ 04:10:25 AM
All I can say is Mike Nichols still has it if he chose this song to accompany his movie, 'cause it blows you away.
by nienna on 12-15-2004 @ 05:18:46 PM
This song is so beautiful.. Who's the woman singing? Her voice is mesmerising.
by Richie Tenenbaum on 12-15-2004 @ 05:29:20 PM
i understand the emotion created here i cant take my mind off of you until i find someone new its true some feel guilty and second question what if or maybe could have they live in the past and try to fix their old and dead relationship like a dull wick can u really light it again???
by JamiesCrying on 12-20-2004 @ 10:16:29 PM
I can't explain it but this song just mesmerizes me. Every time I hear, I stop what I'm doing and take in the words and music. It's so beautiful and powerful. Damien Rice is absolutely amazing.
by twelfth of never on 12-22-2004 @ 08:03:16 AM
I have to agree the inclusion of the song in the movie "Closer" is perfect. I think the verses "the shorter story / no love no glory / no hero in her skies" refer to a girl who doesn't believe in the big epic romantic view of love. And they'll "both forget the breeze" means that even if a wind of change comes, it won't mean much. He can't take his mind or his eyes off this person "'til [he] find[s] someone new."
by Greensky on 12-22-2004 @ 10:17:46 AM
This song is absolutely amazing. I got dragged to Closer... and the second I got home I was searching for this song ... wOw
by bubachub on 12-26-2004 @ 01:56:08 PM
This song is my perfect moment. a few days ago i was laying on my bed with my bf n he jus looked deep into my eyes n took my hand n sang this song really softly to me (along with th track on my cd player) n th lines 'cant take my eyes off of you' nearly made me cry. but thats jus me being all soppy n that :P this song is about leaving love behind, but for me its me n my bf, but theres love, theres happyness. if we wer to break up th lyrics would become clear and th meaning would b about not being with him. but thats the way it goes, wev broken up twice b4 n th song that i played repeatedly in th times we wernt together was blue in th face by alkaline trio, another great song. but this one is beautiful, i love it.
by Alternacool rulz on 12-29-2004 @ 12:37:56 AM
Can totally relate to this.......about being infatuated with someone, thinking they're brilliant and then it working itself out and you getting over them...and then it happening again I can't take my mind..
my mind..my mind..
til I find somebody new..
by triptiensemble on 12-30-2004 @ 10:34:53 PM
best bit: either when he starts to sing 'The pupil in denial' at the top of his voice, or when the female voice is slowly fading away and then his Damiens voice cut's through like a knife 'I Can't take my ming off of you!'
by Remnant04 on 01-06-2005 @ 11:01:52 PM
This is truly a beautiful song, about the purest form of love. Simple and yet so strong it consumes. DR is the definition of originality, in ever sense, their voices work so beauifully together
by xgigglezx on 01-08-2005 @ 07:02:49 AM
=( this song makes me want to cry cause its so pretty. he has such a beautiful voice..and such simple-sounding lines come out so beautifully and powerfully in his song! -sigh- I <3 this song!
by MIC on 01-12-2005 @ 07:30:15 PM
What a beautiful esperience listening to this song!! Beautiful.
by big_w79 on 01-14-2005 @ 01:09:09 AM
This song means the world to me. Asked for the Album Xmas 2003 and my sister bought it for me. Fell in love with Damien's music, but this song in particular. My sister died in November there. The day she died, I had to move the car as it was blocking someone in. This song came on the radio, the first time I had heard it on the radio in the UK. If ever there was a sign that she's watching over me, it was this. I will always treasure this song.
"I can't take my mind off of you..." Cheers DR for the memories.!
by xheartbreakerx on 01-15-2005 @ 09:54:48 AM
I discovered this song from the Closer movie trailer.
I listened to the rest of his music, and it's all wonderful. This song remains my favorite.
I know so many people who are obsessed with this song because of the movie Closer, but then I also know a lot of people who walked out of the movie.. haha. (not personally, but saw them do it when i was there)
- i thought the movie was brilliant. :)
by incoherentlove on 01-15-2005 @ 09:49:43 PM
funny, u wanted to hear the song cause of the film, I want to see the film cause I recognised the song, love it.
by pigoinkwhere on 01-18-2005 @ 08:26:17 AM
I would speculate that this song is about a first love, being young, naive. The chances of a first love being right for you- forever- Hell, the chance that you'll even end up liking them is almost nonexistent. They end up sucking, yet- for some strange reason- you know that you will never feel the same way about anyone else, no matter how perfect they seem.
I admire Damien Rice for reaching into the past and stripping away his jaded, adult perceptions of life (as celebrated in the film) and responding to those pure, innocent, seemingly unrelated thoughts and ideals that, no doubt, everyone begins with in youth.
by pigoinkwhere on 01-18-2005 @ 08:33:34 AM
I love DR as much as the next guy, but if you wanna hear the best ing album ever created, check out the album 'the aeroplane over the sea' by Neutral Milk Hotel. written about the holocaust. genius. will make you want to laugh, cry, celebrate, die, wow... will make damien's music seem incredibly superficial (i know, hard to believe) just do it.
by MaverickArjun on 01-18-2005 @ 01:13:17 PM
I interpret this song as referring to a situation where two people were possibly moving towards a real intimate relationship but somehow it just does not happen. Seems like the woman could not get involved - "just like you said it would be". The man had too many feelings for the women. Tries to move on but he does get wistful at times - "life goes easy on me most of the time". The void won't be filled till "...til I find somebody new".
Awsome expression of emotions...
