what kind of court?

In 2003 I served on a jury in federal court, for a civil suit, and that lasted 5 weeks.

well yesterday, we rendered a verdict after like 8, 9 hours of deliberation

as i said earlier, the defendant was on trial for murder in the 2nd degree, with the lesser included charges of manslaughter in the 2nd degree, and criminally negligent homicide. assault in 2nd degree was the 2nd count on the indictment. in short, we found the man not guilty of murder nor manslaughter, but guilty of criminally negligent homicide and assault. each of the charges had a lengthy definition, and each charge needed certain components to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt for the defendant to be found guilty. right away we decided that given the evidence, we voted not guilty for murder 2 and assault. took a lot longer with manslaughter and CN homicide. that's where much of the debating took place. the circumstances of the death of the victim were really murky, obviously no witnesses. but the cops sorta botched the investigation, and the ADA obviously couldn't make it an open and shut case given all the evidence.

a few interesting things of note from trial

autopsy pictures. they were morbidly interesting... it felt weird looking at a dead body thru pictures, especially with the top half of skull removed, with brain also removed. we saw the part of the skull that the brain sits on from the top down.

deliberations were pretty neat, good way to debate and hash stuff out.

hmm yeah not sure what else i can say. jury duty's worth it. it's not as bad as people say.
