LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Conservative Christian groups accuse the makers of a video starring SpongeBob SquarePants, Barney and a host of other cartoon characters of promoting homosexuality to children.

The wacky square yellow SpongeBob is one of the stars of a music video due to be sent to 61,000 U.S. schools in March. The makers -- the nonprofit We Are Family Foundation -- say the video is designed to encourage tolerance and diversity.

But at least two Christian activist groups say the innocent cartoon characters are being exploited to promote the acceptance of homosexuality.

"A short step beneath the surface reveals that one of the differences being celebrated is homosexuality," wrote Ed Vitagliano in an article for the American Family Association.

yeah, i can see that

I always knew something was up with him.

Guess we need a Constitutional Amendment banning Spongebob. That would be the best to go to chruch and hear a "fire & brimstone" sermon about different cartoon characters being representatives of the devil.

Are you denying the fact that Spongebob is, quite possibly, the gayest animated character ever created?:stongue:

Least his name isn't spongbob (spong being another name for spunk in some parts here).

He's a bit spazzy but apart from that his dress sence is far too bad. He wears the same thing all the time. Also all his close friends are not female.

Thus he can't be a fudge packer.

This storey was auctually on the main Irish TV news last night...i couldnt believe it...i think its the first time ive seen cartoon characters on irish news broadcasts...they quickly dismissed the storey as being led by a bunch of cranks in the US...

Barney looks a bit gay imo...;)

You left out the best part:

Christian groups however have taken exception to the tolerance pledge on the foundation's Web site, which asks people to respect the sexual identity of others along with their abilities, beliefs, culture and race.

"Their inclusion of the reference to 'sexual identity" within their 'tolerance pledge' is not only unnecessary, but it crosses a moral line," James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, said in a statement released Thursday.

So they would like to promote tolerance of abilities, beliefs, culture, and race ... tolerance for everything except for them thar gheys!!

Of course he's gay. Just look at his eyelashes. Can he get more gay?

And while we're on the topic, why is there no Mrs. Squarepants?

I thought the purple Teletubbie was supposed to be the most obvious one. I guess they can all have an outing party with Rep. Drier sometime.

Are they gonna boycott his show now?
What a joke.
