Tore my medial ligament in my knee at the start of November - was in crutches until the end of december. i still get some pain in the back of my knee but apart from that i feel fine running. my problem is when i kick a football i get a sharp pain in my knee and at the same time it feels like the joinr is locking when i swing my leg - very uncomfortable feeling. so my question is - does ligaments repair themselves or do i have to take some sort of action like doing weights? what advice can u give me coz i wanna get back to football fast? (thats soccer for all you american :wtf: )

idk about that specific ligament, but i'd definately recommend doing weight training to strenghten not only that area but the areas around it to support it
i had knee troubles a few years back and never knew what it was (orthopedist didn't either :() but i did a lotta work on my thighs and calfs and i haven't had any problems since
but that was like a possibly subluxation problem
idk i'd say still lay off serious stuff like kicking if its still giving you pain, especially if you've only been off crutches for a month
get better!

Have you gone through your rehabilitation exercises?

I was playing soccer/football once and severely strained some ligaments in my ankle. My doctor gave me some suggestions on simple exercises to bring the ligaments back up to par.

However, I first had to use a walking cast for about six weeks, then do the rehab exercises for another month or so.

If you immediately started playing football again after you got off your crutches, you may have started playing too soon. I don't know what exercises you should do for your rehab, but I'd start there and gradually get back to football.

my friend was playing against a mexican team, and one of the rammed right into him, only getting a yellow card. he had to get surgery back in november and the docter has told him, he might never be allowed to play footie again. he went back to peru to get his surgery cause it much cheaper there than in the USA.

u have to go to rehab to fix it, otherwise u could risk hurting yourself again.

i used to train back in da day when i was fighting my neighbors about the beehives in their dumpsters. my suggestion is to quit trying to be the fastest or the strongest. just get a gun

Coming up on 4 years since I tore my PCL, MCL and lat meniscus. Some how the ACL survived (shocker to a few of the med. staff). Anyway, I went specifically to the Portland Winterhawks Physician (Western Hockey League doc), and we did the whole MRI bit and checked it out. He recommended no surgery (rehab/heal time was the same w/o it...then duh!) and extensive rehab starting about 2 months after the injruy. The one thing he did note was to get on it right away. (weight bearing...not weight training or initial rehab). Plenty of Ice and heat...plenty of inactivity/rest...but NO crutches.

I was in a straight brace for 2 days, began walking with that...then a comp/lockable full leg brace, for one full day, and evenings/nights for about 3 months. (Couldn't wear it flying :() Since then...now 4 years...for all physical activity, I have a DonJoy brace with hinged steel support (you know the ones all the fb players have)

My knee hurts every day (mostly nuisance)...and will hurt forever...it is expected. However, the knee is most likely stronger than my 'good' knee. The meniscus is the source of most of the pain, and when I'm older may be in need of repair.

That said, I missed one day of work (for a doc appt.)...and was skating again in 5 months. I should have missed 3 months of work, but 'I took it like a man' I guess....more like a dork...it was just stupid really. Besides, I couldn't get into the cargo bay of the plane for that long and getting in and out of the flight deck was killer.

The sharp pains you speak. I had them up until about 7 months after. Decreasing from every step initially...then only happened when i made sudden stops...and like you said, trying to kick a ball/object.

Though the severity of injuries always differ...I still try and give people a hard time if they use crutches or miss work for 2 months for a knee job...simply because I missed one day with a serious knee injury....

Oh yeah...Glucosamine and Chondrointin are your friends (bout 500mg ad day everyday....forever and ever) :)

SUCK IT UP YOU !!!! is how my dad put it best :)
