Children Charged With Felonies Over Violent Drawings
POSTED: 5:00 am MST January 26, 2005
OCALA, Fla. -- Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.
The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony. The special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.
"The officer found they were drawing these pictures for the sole purpose of intimidating and scaring the victim," said Ocala Police Sgt. Russ Kern.
The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney's Office.
They were also suspended from school.
One drawing showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, according to a police report. The figures were identified by written names or initials.
Another drawing showed a stick figure hanging, tears falling from his eyes, with two other stick figures standing below him. Other pieces of scrap paper listed misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy who was allegedly threatened.
Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system. |

| Did the school contact the parents first? Did they try some sort of discipline with the parents guidance, rather than calling the police. After all, these kids are probably used to playing violent video games at home and see nothing wrong with what they've done. Then the parents should be arrested and thrown in jail for raising s. :D |

I read this post with disgust and horror. If special education boys aged 9 and 10 are drawing graphically violent drawings, then there is something that is going very wrong. I think disapline is the last thing that should happen. I would call in child services. There is more to this story than its face value.

| Infancy and incapacity are defenses to this sort of thing. I doubt they'd even go to Juvi. |

did anybody here think that these drawings maybe a good thing?
Drawings, and video games let people express urges they shouldnt in real life. They can be an escape. Do kids really use drawings to threaten other kids? I didnt know kids planed murders now...i know some react on instinct or primal urges...but i didnt know they planned them in such detail.
I love playing grand theft auto, purly because it allows me to do things i would never do in real life.
I think drawing maybe a good way for these kids to deal with the 'problem's' they may have.
one more thing, did the boys ever give the drawings to the 'victim'? if not, then its not a threat.
otherwise its just a drawing. |

I really don't think common sense exists anymore.
Since when do we throw KIDS in jail or ANYONE for drawing cartoons? Pathetic is all i can say about this. |
