I just bought the official Euro 2004 review on dvd which shows the highlights of every game. Before the Italy - Bulgaria game, the narrator said "If Sweden and Denmark were to draw 2-2, Italy would be out". I don't understand this. The table looked like this before the game:
1. Sweden 4
2. Denmark 4
3. Italy 2
4. Bulgaria 0
If Italy had won by 2 goals, wouldn't they advance regardless of what happened in the Denmark- Sweden game? What am i missing? |

I think head to head and goals for and against were took in to consideration.
i.e if denmark -sweden drew 2-2 and italy won denmark and sweden would still progress due to a better head to head record ,something along those lines. |

If I remember correctly goal difference ranked lower than head to head in this tournament in determining who progressed. Not sure if it was the first time because I can't remember any previous match as dramatic as that.
Basically, Italy had the worst head to head stats among the three (ironically on goals scored). Italy drew 0-0 with Denamrk and 1-1 with Sweden. Sweden and denamrk ultimately drew 2-2 so as it turned out on goals scored between those 3 teams.
Sweden 3 goals scored
Denmark 2
Italy 1
Bulgaria were eliminated on points tally anyways. |
