In June 2001, 23 year-old forest defense activist Jeffrey "Free" Luers was sentenced to 22 years and 8 months in prison for the burning of three Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV's) in Eugene, Oregon. To make a statement about global warming, Jeff and his codefendent, "Critter", set fire to 3 Sport Utility Vehicles at a Eugene car dealership. Their stated purpose was to raise awareness about global warming and the role that SUVs play in that process. No one was hurt in this action nor was that the intent. An arson specialist at trial confirmed that the action did not pose any threat to people based on its size and distance from any fuel source. Despite the fact that this action hurt no one, caused only $40,000 in damages and the cars were later resold, Jeff was sent to prison for a sentence considerably longer than those convicted of murder, kidnapping and rape in Oregon state. Jeff is a political prisoner and continues to write and agitate for his release while imprisoned at Oregon State Penetentiary. His appeal was filed in January 2002. Please read the latest on his appeal here.

Let me get this straight......

....some dude set three SUV's on fire...

....and you consider him a political prisoner??

The irony is that in burning the SUV's, he released hydrocarbons into the atmosphere. :stongue:

The sentence is harsh, but he should definitely be in jail.

as a conservative:
the only reason murderers and rapists and the like are not in for longer sentences is because of the hippie liberals who whine about the length of prison sentences and how it is the prison system that is corrupting the criminals and all that other garbage. bring back the death penalty and give the murderers the punishment they deserve
-- think about it paul bernardo is sitting comfortably in a cell wouldnt you (and im sure the parents of the girls he killed would) get a certain amount of satisfaction knowing this evil monster had been killed and was not wasting over C$100,000 EVERY YEAR of the public's money? they should kill him in a way that does not contaminate his healthy organs and harvest them for the people in the hospitals that will go a short way to repaying the huge debt he owes society for his despicable acts.
oh but we cant do that to paul bernardo and his ilk because of the short sentences put into place by the liberals. so quit your whining about the relatively short sentences for the murderers and rapists because it was the liberal protesters and governments that made it that way

awww like this aint just...and i do agree with Bernardo...

But again people who can't function in society either it be there criminal or violent characteristics...or a unfit physcially/mentally person who cant fend for his/her own should be killed as well. In extremities is what im implying by that statement

But again...22 yrs for this act is bull

There's no doubt that Bernardo and Homolka should have been executed years ago.

That, however, doesn't excuse this guy.

For the record, I HATE SUV's. :whip:

Earth Liberation Front (ELF) - History

ELF was founded around 1992 in Brighton, England, as an intense derivative of Earth First!, another
environmental extremist organization, desiring to pursue criminal acts in furtherance of its cause. Much
like ALF, ELF is the evolving product from pockets of environmental extremists across the world. From
Darwin’s initial theories on the nature of animals and other
scholarly works concerning environmental sustainability, these
groups have progressed to the modern day firebombing of
those institutions that have caused a breach in their vision of
good society.
The FBI has frequently listed and named ELF as the most
dangerous domestic terrorist organization, given their frequent
assaults both on individuals and businesses and on the market
overall.24 These increased attacks have caused a conservatively
estimated $50 million in property damages25 , yet the
intensity seems to be on a rapid increase.

What kind of dumbass sets fires to property that doesn't belong to them??
To have that kind of sentence, it seems the history between ELF's and Luers' is that of wanton destruction of private property to prove their point.
I'm going to guess that the judge was very aware of Luers' sociopathic history before handing down that sentence...

Well you know what they say... you play with you fire, you're gonna get burned.

Political prisoner? Hahahahaha:stongue: It is a pretty harsh sentance though, as repugnant as is the idea that one can VIOLATE PROPERTY RIGHTS and then claim moral supremacy by "advocating for the environment." What do you expect from the Left Coast?:)

If he's got a substantial history of this, that might explain the sentence.

Everyone freaking out at how "harsh" it is might want to look at criminal record before commenting...no one gets this kind of sentence for a first offence, even in the f'd up U.S. legal system ;)

No ... you'd not only need a criminal record but also a HORRIBLE lawyer to get that kind of sentence.

Nevertheless, arson is arson no matter why you committed it. Property damage is still a criminal offense. Harsh sentence? Sure. But these people think he should be FREED? Hah!

I think the western world is exhibiting a bit of a backlash on political nutcases in the 21st century, which is a very good thing. Liberals burning SUVs is hardly any different from conservatives burning abortion clinics - which, as I recall, resulted in a global freakout and some very harsh sentences. In my mind, this sort of ties in with the ban on fast-food lawsuits; the U.S. government is telling its citizens that the good-intentions blanket of left-wing politics is not to be used as a tool for the oppression of innocent people (or companies). Politically-motivated crime can actually be worse than ordinary crime when viewed from a certain perspective.
