Trance Genres for a Noob
View this Thread in Original format

Hey, I'm very new to trance and EDM in general. I'm currently trying to figure out what genre of trance I like. I need some help.

My favorite songs so far are...

Xpander (sasha??)
Requiem for a Dream (leama and moor)
ATB Don't Stop
For an Angel (Paul van Dyk)
Godspeed (BT)
uh...
Crayons (Leama & Moor)
Magnetic North (Sasha)
Nothing but you (Paul van Dyk)

Is there a genre that defines most of these?
What other songs might I like?

Thanks!

You enjoy EDM. That's all the genres you should be concerned about. Have fun exploring its large field.

agreed, do not waste to much time analyzing each song, if its good its good.

Requiem for a Dream (leama and moor) progressive trance
ATB Don't Stop trance

Magnetic North (Sasha) (never heard it)
Nothing but you (Paul van Dyk) trance

Is there a genre that defines most of these?
What other songs might I like?

Have a play around at http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html

It will give you ideas on styles of music to look for you may never have known even existed....

EDM is so much more interesting and stimulating than mainstream.

Now be very carefull while reading this guys' crap! To Ishkur, the whole epic Trance-scene seems to suck. (Which is nonsense of course!)

very true... although the guide is useful to help categorize your tastes, the guide is INCREDIBLY opinionated, so dont assume what you like is complete crap, just cause it says so. I recommend just reading the titles to find out what edm subgenre you're listening to and then listen to the samples.

sad thing is, in some sub-genres, Ishkur provides samples of some terrible crap with trance classics.

It's not fully accurate, but its a good place to start :)

I'd say that's one of the most accurate things in his guide.

I like the music, but I'm aware of what it's done to trance.

Tilt and Solarstone, yeah. But only Holden's early stuff, his recent stuff is just trippy. And Subsky seems to span a couple categories of EDM as well.

-And at this point if you like ATB (as I do, but many people will flame you for it), I'd recommend checking out his other stuff. His flavor never really changes, so if you like one ATB track, odds are you like all of them.

I like the music, but I'm aware of what it's done to trance.

It's both true and not. He has very valid points about the commercialization of trance that are correct, but presents them in a brutal and arrogant style that takes getting used to. These days I can translate through it to what he might say were he not so compelled to load it with acidic sarcasm, as if it were some dialect, but I personally think the flavor it adds isn't worth the trouble.

My only beef with him these days is the criticism of progressive trance as a genre name. Progressive wasn't conceived as a pretentious label -- although it morphed into that -- but merely as a label for the progressions which highlighted the subgenre.

And his refusal to separate eurotrance from epic trance, but that's another issue.
