The FA have revealed that England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence has been diagnosed with prostrate cancer.

The former Liverpool keeper will be taking a break from his coaching duties with England to receive treatment.

Under-21 coach Martin Thomas will step in for Clemence while he undergoes treatment, with Tony Parks moving up to cover the Under-21 ranks.

Although Clemence will be forced to take a break from his job, he is confident that he can get back to work as soon as possible.

"The news I have had from the doctors so far has been very positive and encouraging," Clemence told the FA's website.

"I'm looking forward to getting the treatment out of the way and returning to work as soon as possible."

Clemence won 61 caps during his playing days, and has been coaching England's goalkeepers for the last six years.

The 56-year-old was widely regarded as one of the best keepers of his time, and enjoyed fantastic success at Liverpool.

Clemence won 12 major honours while at Anfield, and kept 335 clean sheets in his 665 appearances, before moving to Tottenham, and later being awarded the MBE.

Let's hope he can make a good recovery, he's very respected and it's a shame when bad things happen to good people :(
