this is probably a dumb question... but do you need a passport to travel in europe if you are a us citizen living in a european country? my passport is being 'processed' right now for several weeks, but i would like to go to different countries during the weekends. do they check passports if you go by bus? will a copy suffice?

I don't see why not, actually.

If your flying they will check your passport, if you take a train they usually dont but depends on which countries your going in and out of and on boats they usually do at the place you get off. I'm guessing you have duel nationality US/(Some EU country?) passport? To be safe its best to keep your passport on you when traveling into different countries anyware.

depends how far youre gonna go...obviously if youre heading to sweden, no biggie...but you SHOULD have a copy of the passport and another id.

but yeah, its always good to have a passport...esp if it has your visa in it...sometimes leaving isnt the problem, getting back into your home country is|

Depends if you are travelling within the Schengen countries or not.

The UK is not a Schengen country so I always need my passport whenever leaving the country.

Best bet is to take it with you anyway in case you get into difficulties.

I'd advice you to keep your passport with you at all time, depending on the country you're going to. Since Jan 1st every Dutch citizen has to be able to identify himself or you get fined and possibly incarcerated until your identity is cleared (I don't quite know the policy on this, but I've heard it happened, the fine is something like E40,- ). I don't know how it works for international peeps, but I'd still advice you to keep at least a photo-id with you all the time, and definitely always a passport when you go to a different country.
