Sorry if this is old news but my search isn't working... Anyone seen that vw golf commercial w/ the remix of singing in the rain and the cgi of gene kelly dancing? I just watched it and it's probably one of the cooler commercials I've seen. |

The commercial may very well be the best advertisement Ive ever seen. Ive watched the ad prolly 20 times now, and the music is simply amazing. The music from the original movie was remixed by Mint Royale, however its not released yet (but i'll definately be taking a look at it once its in stores)
The dancing theme reminds me of the apple ipod advertisements. the only thing is, theyre beginning to piss me off (over played and media hype). VW has always had good design with advertising beginning with William Bernbachs "Lemon" advertisement. The simplicity behind their creative strategy is amazing. Subtle provocation of human stimuli is so much better then going nuts and spoonfeeding the general public with aggressive advertising. DDB is behind the advertisement, they had to persaude the Kelly family that the ad would be appropriate and non offensive. Some people are taking offense to it, i call these conservative anal pussies. Anyway, this is brilliance :)
VW = awesomeness in every way, and the cars are great too :) |

DDB produced the commercial, one of my profs used to work for DDB. I'll ask him if he knows anything about it. Another one of my profs also worked as a creative or art director for VW (cant remember which one exactly). Anyway, ill see if i can dig up some info. :) |

this is just a stupid random Fact o' the day:
Gene Kelly (and I think Fred Astaire) both had clauses in their contracts that specifically and explicitly said that all of their dancing numbers in their movies had to be filmed in whole.
The reason was so that audiences could see their legs and feet when they danced and could be assured that it WAS, in fact, Gene Kelly dancing and not someone doing special effects or anything. |

The cog ad is taken from a movie (can't remember the title) that i've seen. In the movie a similar Rube Goldberg like chain reaction lasts for what seems like forever... I gave up watching after 20 minutes or so.
I think the choreography in the Widow Likcer video is the best "umbrella" dancing i've ever seen. |

Its cool how they did the graphics on the guy, but theres not much to it, i seen the other one with the terrorist in the car getting blown up...not much to that one either. Maybe there is something here that im missing.... |

It's NOT short of amazing. The idea of taking a classic scene and remaking it through a modern perspective is rather unique. You're wrong in saying that if you're not into EDM then you won't find it amusing to watch. I know a ton of people over a span of forums that hate "techno" music but adored this commercial.
Don't compare the terrorist one to this. It's good for one watch and then is boring. Most people can watch this one over and over and enjoy.
Definitely missing something. |
