happy new year everyone ..

here's some horriscope fun:

It's time to crow
Roosters take centre stage Tuesday as the Lunar New Year starts

JANICE MAWHINNEY
LIFE WRITER

He's the swaggering barnyard creature who wakes everyone up at 4 a.m., the model for the words cocky and cocksure, the bird who's known for fighting and who doesn't soar in the air the way others do.

But the rooster is also proud and handsome, shining with colourful plumage. He's confident and assertive and rules his roost, king of all he surveys. He makes sure his voice is heard. He's just bursting with courage.

And he's about to be celebrated, on Tuesday, the start of the Year of the Rooster according to the 4,605-year-old Chinese Lunar Calendar. This Lunar New Year, which takes place at the second new moon after the winter solstice, is festively observed by ethnic Chinese all around the world, as well as by some other Asian cultures such as Korean and Vietnamese.

Now that's something to crow about.

We're considered roosters — those of us born in 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981 or 1993.

It's not something I've felt particularly proud of, especially since I read in a Chinese astrology book a few years ago that we roosters can be difficult to live with and have overly high expectations of a mate, so we often have checkered relationship patterns. We're thought to be bossy. Stubborn. Big ego.

Puh-leeze. What do you expect of someone who is only said to be compatible with snakes, ox and the occasional pig or horse?

At least we are known for being hard-working, courageous, loyal, trustworthy, self-sufficient and honest. And in the right company, we can be the life of the party.

You know where you stand with us roosters. Some people might say we're blunt — we call it as we see it. We're not only straightforward, but we are individualistic, very true to ourselves, sometimes absolutely eccentric. We hate put-downs. And we can be real romantics.

I've been mystified to see that so many of my fellow roosters actually do fit our description of being natty dressers, fashion mavens, great with money and fanatical about order and tidiness. I'm messy, myself, and not so gifted at juggling my debts. Also, I'm the only person in this corner of the newsroom who doesn't have the remotest idea of what's in style this season.

Paul Ng of Richmond Hill, who studies Chinese astrology and feng shui, has prepared life charts for 821 roosters over the years and says that, unsurprisingly, not all of us are typical. Some of our differences may come from the fact that each Chinese sign is divided into five elements: wood, water, metal, fire and earth. Like 1945, 2005 is a wood rooster year.

Catherine Zeta-Jones, Steve Martin and Neil Young are fellow roosters, as are Mia Farrow, Eric Clapton, Spike Lee, Bette Midler, Carly Simon, Goldie Hawn and Stephen Fry.

So were Johann Strauss, Katharine Hepburn and Peter Ustinov. We're an oddly assorted lot.

Ng says he expects this Year of the Rooster to bring more major earthquakes and ferocious winds. Specifically, he says, he expects to see volcano and earthquake activity in Japan, Taiwan, and California, as well as fast-spreading forest fires in B.C. and northwest Alberta.

It will be a good year for the world economy, he says, although the United States will recede in power and will find itself stuck in a resource-draining situation in Iraq. He predicts a major negative event in Washington D.C.

The Canadian economy will remain stable, Ng says, with interest rates staying low and most financial markets doing well, especially gold, iron and steel.

The real estate market will continue to be strong in Vaughan, North York and downtown Toronto, he predicts, but will not do as well in Mississauga, Etobicoke and Scarborough.

He says there will be plenty of scientific breakthroughs in the coming year, a revival of the movie business and a large number of marriages involving older brides and younger grooms.

Ng sees the Canadian dollar hovering around 80 cents to 90 cents U.S., economic growth of 3 per cent to 4 per cent, and an unemployment rate around 7 per cent to 9 per cent. Canadian companies will be expanding into the U.S. and buying out American companies.

Here are Ng's recommendations for the 12 birth-year groups in Chinese astrology:

Lunar year bodes well for Ox, Tiger, Dragon, Snake

Rooster (1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993)

It's a mixed year for roosters. Money and power are favourable for you, as long as you avoid gambling and speculation. It's a volatile year for romance, though, with possible communication problems in this area. Illegal activities lead to big trouble, so give them a miss. Exercise and rest well, or you will tire easily and have low energy. Stay alert and avoid accidents if possible.

Dog (1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994)

Dog and rooster are conflicting signs, so be careful of backstabbing, rumours and controversies. Work on developing your people skills. It's a good year for travel, especially for business. You may argue a lot with your beloved, and you need to watch your diet and digestive system. But there's a lucky sun sign that can help you through most troubles.

Boar (1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995)

It's a mobile year for boars. There's an opportunity for you to move at work, and there may be lots of travel. You may find it a romantically lonely year or have misunderstandings with your partner, but there is a money star associated with you, so even if you spend a lot, you should come out in the black. Be careful so you can avoid accidents wherever possible.

Rat (1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996)

It's a year to exercise patience, although you should do very well if you are in people-related businesses or entertainment. Watch out for controversies, arguments, gossip or even legal conflicts. You should see plenty of romance, with a few unavoidable arguments. There's a money star associated with you, so finances should be good, even though you're spending freely this year. Take care not to overwork and burn out.

Ox (1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997)

This is a good year for the ox, with promotions at work or business expansion likely and improvements in romantic relationships indicated. Any studies you do should bring good results this year. Your money situation looks positive if you avoid greed and financial traps. It's not a great year for elective surgery, though, and do take care to avoid potential accidents and legal wrangles.

Tiger (1926, 1938, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998)

Tiger has a dominant lucky sign this year, and you may well get a promotion at work, or gain more power in some way, especially if you are already in a position of authority. Your health and your usual source of income are stable, but try to avoid risky investments and contagious illnesses. Romantic relationships may involve arguments. Make an effort to listen more and talk less.

Rabbit (1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999)

This is a good year to stay low key and be happy with your present situation, since rabbits and roosters are opposites. Things look smoother for male rabbits than for females. Romance and finances may be unstable, but you can improve matters by being especially considerate to others and especially cautious in matters relating to your money. Get lots of rest and regular exercise. Be sure to look after yourself. It's not a great year to change jobs, expand your business, or to gamble or speculate.

Dragon (1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000)

Everything's coming up roses for dragons in the areas of work, finances and romance. It's a great year to get married, very lucky, and good for relationships in general. You're making sound decisions, and people are there when you need help. Things are expansive at work and new sources of income are likely. In the health area, be careful of overwork and exhaustion.

Snake (1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001)

Snake and rooster are closely connected, and this is an auspicious year for snakes. Things will go well at work, with a possible promotion, and you have good judgment with investments. It's a fine year for snakes to start a business or expand an existing one. Romance is solid and this is a particularly lucky year to marry. Drive carefully, though, and take good care of your health.

Horse (1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002)

Horses should have lots of luck and help, and be able to extricate themselves from trouble when it arises. There's romance, but it comes with undercurrents. Still, it's a good year for marriage. Health looks sound, income looks stable, and you should do especially well in your career if you work in show business, marketing or public relations.

Sheep (1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003)

This is a year for caution and care. Things appear to start with difficulty before improving. Sheep may find it a better year for spiritual endeavours than for romance, and there are likely to be lonely moments. Overall, though, your work and income look stable. Avoid financial speculation. Take a conservative path with money, work and health.

Monkey (1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004)

Not everything will go smoothly for monkeys, although males fare better than females. Romance, however, is heating up, with lots of opportunities. It's a lucky year to marry. Things at work may be volatile, and there may be small irritations in the health area, especially with your arms and legs. Your income should be stable or positive in the long run, even if you lose before you gain.
