lent some cash to my mum a while back while she was havin a tough month, so she said she'd pay me back. Months later she finally decides to tell me that she's ordered me a digital camera cos she knows i've wanted one. I look at reviews of it and it looks hideous. How do I get out of it and so she sends it back for one of my choice at the same price, I don't want to piss her off but I want something I can use well :( |

| tell her the camera she got you is crap. Then show her pictures of what you want from a catalogue or something. |

Perhaps when it arrives, you could tell her it seems to be broken, and you'd like to return it for a new one. Then when you return it, include a letter asking for store credit, which you will then use in conjunction with a payment method of your choice to buy a camersa you want.
Or just be honest with her. Tell her that camera doesn't fit your specific needs and suggest several to her that will. Offer to pay any difference in cost. |

yeah, that's what i do, though it all depends on the kind of relationship you have with your mom |

| Whatever you do don't open it up(if you do, there's a chance they won't take it back). Then ask your mum for the receipt, and return it to the store saying it was a gift that you don't want or want to exchange. With it not being open, they should take it back without any questions asked. Just make sure you return it ASAP! |

"oh hey mom check this out. I did some research on that camera and dug up a little known flaw with it that tends to eventually cause catastrophic failure in its circuitry. Is there any way we can cancel/return that and take a look at some other? You and the internet are both awesome, im glad we can take care of this instead of the old days where I had to beat the milk man to death with his own stupid shoes"
I always say something weird after ive made a good point. that way it seems like I dont care at all about the ed situation.
cheers.
also, im insane and ive taught people how much I dont care over the years so dunno if thatll work with you hehe. |

Your in the UK so if it's off the net (or mail order) you have a "cooling off period" thing I think.
If it's a store they have similar thing I think, but you don't have to pay postage.
Maybe have to pay for postage, it shouldn't be a problem returning it though either way. |

If it were my mother, I'd tell her this the same way :) |

I had the same problem when my dad bought me a phone. I wanted a Nokia 7610, and he knew I did, but the bitch at the counter twisted his arm into getting me something else (a Sharp GX20). It's a good phone, but not as good as the one I wanted, and it cost about twice as much lol.
So I eventually plucked up the courage to say something to him, and he said that he looked at the Nokia, and thought that it was ugly, and the woman told him that it "wasn't very popular". When my dad told me that I said "Damn right it's not popular, it's only been out a week!!". Anywho he tried to change it but they wouldn't let him because there was nothing actually wrong with it. :(
The moral of the story is, never try. |

i got a better story w/ a better moral...
Its just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. Then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar. |

so I'm getting my car when :p ?
I've phoned her up at work and did the honesty thing. Told her "I've seen lots of reviews on it and its not got good ratings, theres sample pics taken with it and it'd be a waste of money if I had it, cos i'd not be able to do what I wanted with it, so if we send it back unopened (I've read thats the only way this place t akes it back) and get one more expensive but the one i want and i'll pay the difference is that ok"
she said yes, and not to worry, thank .
Problem is sometimes with these middle aged women they get moody when you reject stuff, she can fly off t he handle if I dont wanna eat something she's made, but in this case, I win :)
thanks for the advice guys :) |
