Nice/awful neighborhoods?

Hello
I've recently moved to NYC to work at Brooklyn College and Columbia University for 6 months+. So far I am staying at a hotel, but need to find some room somewhere. So far I've been thinking about downtown Brooklyn, Williamsbourg or Greenpoint, as they seem to be "safe" neighborhoods with relatively low rents. Can some of you veteran New Yorkers recommend some hoods or (just as importantly) warn me of some? |

| A friend of mine use to live in the Upper East Side 100-110th inbetween there and had said it was moving on up in scale and weeding out the thugs. maybe check there? village voice, new york times, and craigslist are also great avenues to check out info |
