with a normal trance track...
well lets say you got 2 tracks mixed perfectly, and i'm just curious (and I even imagined how it would sound like) if it would be a great idea to do some scratching to one of em? |

Sure, thats four.
I dont think it would sound good though, simply because its trance. Also, the whole concept of scratching while having two tracks matched does not sound that good, there would be too much going on, it would sound too cluttered in alot of cases.
If you were mixing straight intro/outro you could have a more minimal sound, which might be suitable. Say just a kick on one record, and a hat on the other. Then it wouldnt sound too cluttered, and you could just scratch around until a synth on the main track starts to pick up.
But to answer your question, no I don't think it would sound good with as you said "a normal trance track" also I dont really understand what you mean by "scratching to one of em" The scratching would be in the master sound, so it would be to both of them, there wouldnt really be a way to scratch to one of them, unless they were not matched properly, in which case you would be scratching to the rhythm of one record while the other goes by a different rhythm...that certainly would not sound good though.:wtf: |

I know exactly what you mean by scratching along to one of them, making a certain sound and making it seem like its part of the track, it is possible, but only with certain tracks, a local DJ back in my old town was an awesome DJ, he would scratch often in his trance sets to the music, he did some amazing things, I got some of his sets on minidisc, I should put some up, he really was a DJ that had a fresh sound, he really should of got more exposure than he should, but yes, you can scratch to trance, its just really hard to get it to sound right, plus it depends on the track playing, don't let anything hold you back, if you think it could work, DO IT, this is how you can become unique and not another DJ that sounds like the other million out there.
Oh yea, he scratched the accapella of Need A Miracle over the top of Cafe Del Mar, sounded amazing and just like it was one track, hes done this with more, but this is the first that comes to mind. |

Yea, but Johan Gielen also isn't great at beatmatching, he might not be able to pull it off, but doesn't mean other DJs can't. |

scratching with Trance: probly the most preposterous thing i've ever heard of..
though i can't get enough of when some of my fav. djs scratch with techno...sounds so in wicked :wtf: |

i have scratched over trance, but only if there is a solid breakbeat portion of a track. it can sound really good if the scratch sound & playing track sound good. i havent done this in ages.. the last time was probably over the breakbeat part of 'punk'. i also have been experimenting with alot of techno, and scratching over it sounds way better imo :)
dont be discouraged to try something new if it isnt normal or if others say it sounds bad. just try it out and have fun with it. thats the whole point of being a dj

hehe, that's what i meant... cuz i'm not the best at beatmatching, nor phrase matching, but i think i sound decent enough to try something else... i played witht he EQ knobs for awhile, got *yawn* also, well not boring as in OH I DONT WANNA DJ ANY MORE, but like AHH I SOUND LIKE EVERY OTHER TRANCE DJ, and well I thought how about scratching... lol |

Now thats the right attitude, everyone needs to experiment more, theres to many DJs sounding the same, and if it wasn't for people trying new things and experimenting, we wouldn't be where we are today with EDM, I try a hellava lot of out when just mixin around, alot sounds like utter , but sometimes you end up pulling off some amazing things, and it makes all that time and effort worth while, I must admit most the time scratching over trance won't sound good, you just gotta learn how to do it right, if you don't scratch right over house, breaks, techno and so on, guess what it'll sound like ass, just practice and try ANYTHING you think could sound good, theres to many people saying there are no rules to DJin, but so many that when talking about mixing, they make it sound like you have to mix a certain way, the only real RULE I can think of is making sure everything is goin in rhythm with each other, if you don't want to mix in phase, DON'T, I have heard certain transitions that actually sounded better being 2 beats ahead of the outgoing track and so on, its a very hard thing to do with it sounding good, but when you do it, its worth it.
Anybody think Q-Bert would be where he is if he didn't break the norm and make his own scratch sounds and styles. |

| scratching over trance is great as long as you use the right scratching technique for the track that is playing. we have done it on several occasions in front of crowds and the respose is good. |
