Problems with back-cueing and mixer

I just got 2 numark tt-x turntables last weekend and I think they are really great, but I am having two problems.
1. One problem is either with my mixer or my headphones. I have a numark cm-100 mixer and labtec c-184 headphones (i also use these headphones at my computer and ill be getting new ones soon). When I have two songs playing at the same time and have my heaphone cross-fader set to pgm (far-right) no sound comes out of the headphones. When it is set to mix (middle) both songs come in at full volume and when i have it set to cue (far-left) it sounds the same as when it is set to mix. And everything also sounds the same when the cue-mode is set to split. I'm not sure if the problem is with my mixer or my headphones but if you could help me out or make any suggewstions that would be great.
2. My second problem is skipping when back-cueing. I have two Stanton 500 AL II cartridges on both of my S-shaped tonearms and when I slowly move the platter in reverse with my hand, the cartridge wobbles and then skips. Even when I have the tonearm weight on full, it still skips and the anti-skate adjustment doesn't make any difference. Again, any suggestions, comments and/or help would be greatly appreciated.
I am also going to get a new mixer soon and was just wondering what a good mixer is with good sound quality and some good sound effects cause i will be spinning techno. This probably sounds very noobish but i guess thats what this forum is for ;) Thanx in advance. |

vestax pcv 275 is a great mixer.. but no built in effects. just hook up an efx to it and youre money. if you have more money to blow then check out the denon x1500. great mixer there with some onboard effects. to get the most effects (which is definitely recommended for techno) then youll definitely need (and want) a separate unit

I had the same skipping problem with the same carts. First, check out this site: http://www.djforums.com/tutorials/ for how to properly adjust your tonearm. If it still doesn't work, try using the screw on weights that go in the headshell. When you do this, remember to also lower the weight on the dial or you will wear down your vinyl quickly.
Some records just skip when you back cue no matter what you do. It depends on the pressing and other things, it sucks but you just need to deal with it. Either cue at a different point or release it carefully.
As for the mixer, I second what Razzi said. I had a pcv 275 for while as my first mixer and its great. Its got 3 eq's which is key.
hope this helps.. |
