I just found a really cool utility called Rapid Evolution. For those interested in harmonic mixing, it has the ability to key mp3s precisely as well as find their bpms. It also acts as a music catalogue with you being able to rate certain mixes between songs. It makes suggestions as well for good harmonic mixes.
It's a little hard to use. There aren't really instructions or anything, but the website that you can download it from has forums, and they're decent, plus the guy who coded the software responds to every post.
Anyways, thought someone might like to give it a try.

| Sounds awesome, only problem is how do u get a track to load into there? :( |

| at the bottom left, theres an import track part. everything kinda takes a while cuz its made in java, but thats the deal... also, you need the 1.4.2 JRE to run it, in case you were having problems... |

As always... anyone know how reliable the key function actually is?
Given that many attempts have been made so far to get something that actually works I remain to be impressed by this type of software.
Besides, use your ears and learn something instead.

| I'm totally for using your ears. The keying is pretty accurate, not perfect. The program also has a midi keyboard so that you can figure out the key on your own while listening. It's less of a program for keying songs, than finding mixes you might not have thought of, and being able to remember mixes you've made and rating them... (i don't quite understand how to use that part of the program yet, but it seems like a good idea...) |

However, if you do indeed intend to start to key your own tracks you will require a certain amount of musical knowledge even if it is just how to play certain chords on keyboard or guitar.
You can however rely on the key detection of the other users in this thread but you wouldn't be able to get the key of a track that only you had for example.
We have explained it a few times in this thread but I can understand why it would be less than easy to find it at this stage in the game.
Bottom line is that you need just a tiny bit of musical knowledge to do this well.
The numbers refer to the Camelot method of placing tracks together and the letter with small 'm' etc. are just the regular terms in music.
Familiarise yourself with these concepts first and then we can start talking how to go from there.
Cheers

hi,
ive recently found that the key detection tool is quite inaccurate. Ive gone through all my songs - about 200 of them - and now i find out that most of the keys are wrong. (i did this by finding other sites that show the keys of songs). Are there any programs that accuratley identify the key of songs? |
The Admin:

that said, i'm always working to improve the key detector (it's not an exact science)... do you mind sending me a few sample songs that it gets wrong? when it guesses the wrong keys, are any close at all (as in, perhaps a relative major/minor, or a dominant or subdominant key)? have you played the songs while playing chords in the key RE2 identifies to see if it sounds close? does the live key detector report different results? any feedback you can provide would help me improve the tool... keep in mind there is no tool to date that will key your songs completely accurately. |

lol, a thread on this had sorta already been started in the DJ booth a while back.
Regarding keying, I think the best way to do it in RE is to do the dynamic key detector, rather than specifically tell it to key the song. The dynamic key detector will give you a range of keys, and then, using the built in piano, you can pick which is right...
Also, when you import songs, it connects to the server to check the songs against the database, so that speeds things up. |
