ok .. i know you guys are going to flame me for this, but i can take it .. i am a n00b .. ahhaha ..
but i just loaded windows xp service pack 2 like about 3 months ago, and i like it's security issues it covered and pop up blocker .. however, i do not like the way it is killing my memory damn it .. i don't know if it is my computer or not .. i have did a couple of tests to see how much memory it has been using ..
when i boot up my system, it has about 112 mb used .. when i boot up the net (dial up .. :whip: ), it goes up to about 135 to 140 mb .. then i open 1 prog while online, and the memory shoots up to about 200 mb .. i open winamp, and it the memory shoots up another 45 to 50 mb .. the most i have seen it maxed out to is about 315 mb of memory used .. i have 256 mb of memory on my computer .. :whip: .. do you guys and gals get these same instances as me ?? overuse of memory ??? ..
i open the same type of progs on my windows 2000 system, and the most it shoots up to is about 225 mb .. and i have winamp 5, mysql, and JBuilder (java prog .. takes up a lot of mem space) open ..
:conf: :conf:
i am thinking of just hopping back to service pack 1. |

256mb is unacceptable on either OS tho.... get some more ram! :p
I just went from 768megs of pc2100 to a gig of pc3200 and its so in nice, I cant even begin to explain (well that and a new proc!).
HL2 boots so fast now!
Im also running mysql and apache in the bg. |
yeah .. i am thinking about just dumping my hp 533, and just get a custom computer or something like that .. i don't have time to put one together with dumb school and work and '24' ruining my life .. hahahahah ..
but yeah ... i maxed out my win2000 computer at 256 .. my windows xp computer has another 256 slot, so i prob am going to buy another stick ... seriously .. what the hell is windows doing in the background behind the os that takes up so much memory .. i saw explorer taking up about 40 mbs and svchost taking another 30 mbs .. what the hell ? |

Go to www.blackviper.com to see suggested services you can safely turn off if you can't figure it out yourself to save yourself some free RAM. Not an advertisement for the site, BTW, but info is useful to n00bs.

xp build 2600
service pack nothing for me.
just a solid firewall and a free avg thing to keep me protected :)
running aston (with them window fading and ) winamp, opera (4 pages) firewall, winmx, AV, msn, net
and page file is like 205mb (it was at 160mb)
not bad i say, compared to the 905mb 2000 was churning out when i was encoding a few mp3s for a night |

are u sure you dont have many many programs start during startup or many many spyware/adwares on your pc. goto msconfig and disable some shizzle and uninstall never used apps...also defrag/chkdsk if u have too.
or just do a fresh install of xp w/sp2 |

256mb is barely workable on in todays market, esp if u want to run windows xp.
my machine, isnt doing alot at the minute, is using 285mb of ram.
512mb is barely do-able, with 1gig of ram now being considered a standard.
I deff get some more ram. or if the ram u have is old and slow, like PC2100, or PC2700, scrap it all and get 1gig of PC3200 ram. obviously only if u can afford it.
hopping back to service pack 1 isnt a good idea. MS didnt relase SP2 just to eat ur machine. it contains vital security issues and without SP2, your machine will be outdated, and vunerable to windows based holes or exploits. |

| I didn't notice any changes when installed SP2. I doubt big memory usage is caused by it. |
