No. If both services were identical (ie in perfect competition) the scenario posed by baystreetboi would be correct, but I don't forsee Sympatico capping their ISP services in response to Rogers' move.

This is due to the different characteristic of cable and DSL networks. Cable networks are prone to congestion because no user has his/her own private connection to the internet. DSL (Dedicated subscriber lines are much less prone to congestion because each individual user has his/her own connection to to the backbone. So if Sympatico were to cap thier networks it might reduce overall traffic, but it wouldn't improve performance.

The congestion issue aside, the problem is that bandwidth in the aggregate still costs Bell $$. If all of a sudden they get a huge surge of new users that are bandwidth "abusers" on their network coming over from Rogers, they aren't going to take very kindly to this. They'll have little choice but to implement caps (particularly in the near term) to deal with the situation.

Rogers and Bell both went through this cap issue a few years back. I think it was easily within a month of each other that they announced the additions / changes to the caps on both services.

Basically put, no ISP wants the users that use 100GB, 200GB, whatever on their networks. Those aren't the people they make the big bucks off of, so to lose them isn't really that much of a concern, particularly if it makes the online experience for the vast majority of other users that don't even come close to the cap more enjoyable.

what about added load on the main backbone itself ? would that warrant a cap by Bell ?

bottom line, ive had too many problems with Rogers in my life i wont even get into it, ive switched to Sympatico (Which is CHEAPER and FASTER and UNLIMITED speed) about 5-6 months ago, and all i gotta say is :whip: to Rogers, they really STINK and those of you who havent switched to sympatico , better do it already, dont waste ur time with Rogers

lets just say i can download at 315 k max speed, morning, night, afternoon, u name it, time isnt a factor (like Rogers) and upload is 80 k max for me, which im sure, none of u Rogers customers get, atleast i know i didnt get even close to that speed with Rogers
