| lol its 6:26am right now. I just saw a story on BT about a guy who hit a pot hole on the highway, and his passenger airbag blew out! lol! Then because it went off, his cars engine cut, and he came to a rolling stop. He was driving some BMW, and said theres $5000 damage. So he wants the province to pay for it. Then they showed some more pot holes, and holy frig!!! So many HUUUUGE ones! |

^^ dood... there are some insane potholes on northbound McCowan close to where you live. OMFG, I went over one a few days ago, thought I bent my rim. Had to pull into a nearby gas station just to make sure the car one still in one piece.
This happened to me two years ago and I wasn't so lucky. The pothole had a jagged edge and not only bent the rim but also ripped the tire. I didn't know at the time that I could have been reimbursed by the city. Thanks for the info Swamps. |

| I was driving westbound on Steeles Ave from Yonge towards Bathurst yesterday, and holy mother of G-d, were there some nasty looking potholes all along that stretch!!! Luckily, I didn't hit any, but my goodness, that stretch of road is a nasty one. Such shoddy paving there, crazy, evil potholes a-plenty. I dont even know what its like on the eastbound lanes... |

| Dont expect it to get any better unless the city gets sued en masse. Remember in Toronto you are evil for driving so you should know better!! :thepirate |

Welcome to my hood hehe... That stretch has been like that as far as I can remember (~6 years). Eastbound is much worse than westbound. I usually end up taking the smaller streets up to Bathurst. Oh, one of the eastbound lanes was fully flooded about 2 weeks ago. |

So you’ve been driving through Toronto’s pothole ridden streets when your car hits one of those road ruts head on.
Before you know it, your front end is out of alignment and your back end is in spasm.
And your car’s not so good, either.
If one of those gigantic gaps damages your automobile, do you have any way of getting the city or the province to repair it? Turns out you do, but like most things in government, you have to cut through some red tape to do it.
Here’s how to stake your claim and undo the damage:
City of Toronto
First you have to prove it was the city’s fault. Toronto’s legal department never pays out a claim without a thorough investigation first.
Needless to say, the powers-that-be suggest you go through your insurance company first.
But if you decide to pursue the complaint, you have to submit it in writing. The claim has to include the time, date and location of the incident, a description of what happened, and a damage estimate.
And don’t wait. Any such bid for compensation has to be done, in the city’s underlined words, “immediately”.
Address your note to:
City Clerk’s Office, City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, Toronto. M5H 2N2
Fax: (416) 392-1867
Or you can email: [email protected]
But even then you’re not finished. Two weeks later, you’ll get another letter in the mail acknowledging receipt of your complaint and if it’s found valid, another form to fill out.
For more information, call (416) 397-4212.
Ontario Highways
The needs are similar to the city, but the envelope or email goes somewhere else.
Mail a comprehensive claim that includes the time, date and location where the damage occurred, and include copies of any relevant documents – like a repair bill or an estimate.
Send it to:
Management Board Secretariat Risk Management & Insurance Services 700 University Avenue, 6th Floor, Toronto. M7A 2S4
Here’s where more government red tape comes in. You can fax the information if you want to (416) 314-4444 - but you have to follow it up with a mailed letter either way. And you may have to wait up to three months for an answer.
Call (416) 314-3443 more information.
Finally, there’s a way to get even with the pothole that did you in. In Toronto, call (416) 599-9090, and then push #164. A crew will assess the problem and if it’s serious, it will be fixed within 48-72 hours.
If you come across a hiccup on the highway, call (416) 235-4686 or toll-free at 1-800-268-4686. |
Further detail to consider with Swamper's submission
The process may take a while so be patient....b/c it may take a few years before you see anything. You see the pothole responsibility is a dual one. One is the city and the other is TTC.
But seriously, don't let it go...too many do that and they count on that (and don't let ur insurance company dissuade u). So make sure to contact your insurance company immediately b/c time is of essense. And they will use the lapse in time as an excuse to have it thrown out.
I helped someone out on this a few years back. TTC has a nasty habbit of contesting any responsibility. Case dragged on to 5 yrs. Payout was minimal for damages. |

THe powers that be in the 70's decided not to spend money on roads, and instead put almost all money earmarked for transportation towards rapid transit.
The result: the Sheppard subway (to nowhere) and the Spadina streetcar........and a load of potholes.
Yay TOronto!! :gsmile: |

I like that shot on the news tonight, they showed Mt. Pleasant & St. Clair where you can see the old cobbletones. Now THAT's depressing.
:toothless |
I drive through that intersection EVERY day to go to work or go downtown...Its been like that for years:eyespop: and you can still see the old streetcar tracks underneath when the surface asphalt breaks away...I guess its TOO expensive to rip out & re-pave so the city just covers it up...
I hate it when it rains at this time of year because the water fills up these potholes & you don't know how deep it is when you drive over them. |
