| Does vinyl play on a laser disc player? or just on TT's... I'm just wondering cause they seem about the same size, but if anybody has got any knowledge or intuitions, id like to hear em! |

| You can't stuff a vinyl record into a regular CD player (vinyl = analog, CD = digital...it just works different, see DJ section thread CD vs. vinyl), but I have seen a record player in a magazine that uses a laser (yes, instead of a needle!) to play back vinyl. This way now matter how often you use your vinyl, it doesn't wear out and get scratched. It's not for the DJ market though, it's for normal use. And i remember that it was very expensive. |

Muhahaha!! Thats one silly question :D
Pjotr: How tha hell can laser read vinyl? I think its totally impossible. There must be a needle that travelles (okok I know its not the best word, but my vocabulary is limited :p) on the surface of vinyl and collects the sound data... its analog, and thats why you can hear the music, when you spin the record with your hand, even when your TT-s arent ON(very silently...) .theres no way that laser could do it!
tell me if im stupid :D |

*chuckles*
yes, you can play vinyl on a laser disc player... you can also play your vinyl with a chisel, a housebrick, or a carving knife. (you have to press on quite hard though)... lol

LMAO what a question..
but, i'm glad I clicked the thread anyway, I found out about TTs that use a laser.. I'm very interested in that..
it could work, what would happen would be the laser would bounce off the surface of the vinyl and the speed that it got back would indicate the wave cut into the vinyl..
I'm very interested in learning more about this, can I find out about it on a website?
I hate knowing that my records are sounding tier each time I spin them.. probably doesn't help that I have 1 ty record player with 30 dollar needle right now, instead of 2 tech12s..
does anyone know if a crappy setup will damage your records more than a good one? the tonearms is curved, but it's like plastic, so... |

It should be technically possible. The needle on a pickup actually only acts as a steering device, whereas the "information" on the record is stored as the relative depth of the track it follows. When the record spins, the small bumps in the track will force the needle up but because of the weight of the rest of the pickup it will not go up as fast and as such the movement of the needle base in proportion to the rest of the pickup is used for interpreting the record.
If you point a laser at the track while the record spins, you should be able to measure the time it takes for the light to reach the record and bounce back to the laser, and thus calculate if this point in the track is a "hill" or "valley". The exact reason why this would work has to do with the enormous precision of frequencies in laser and the principle is utilized in things such as super cooling and holograms - I won't dive deeper into it as that would almost certainly lead to me confusing details and in turn confusing everybody. |
