The body strikes back with a vengeance.
"A new study shows that long-term drinking can cause damage to muscles as well as the liver, Reuters reported Oct. 1.
"It is a common misconception that the brain and the liver are the two organs most affected by chronic alcohol misuse, which results in psychosocial abnormalities and cirrhosis," said Victor Preedy and Peter Emery of King's College in London, England. "Arguably, alcoholic myopathy (muscle damage) represents the most prevalent skeletal-muscle myopathy in the Western Hemisphere."
In their study, Preedy and Emery found that alcoholics can suffer damage to their heart muscle, which makes it function less efficiently. They also found muscle damage that impaired digestion and the body's ability to absorb nutrients.
The nutritionists added that long-term drinking damages muscles by slowing muscle-protein formation and causing changes in calcium regulation and the production of cell-damaging molecules.
The researchers determined that the muscle damage could extend throughout the body, including the legs and the muscles of the gastrointestinal system." |

| I feel for you FF. Once after drinking a bunch of rootbeer I had one of those carbonated burps that come out your nose. Totally sucked, I've since not touched a drop of rootbeer. :o |
