My new track... 192kbps trance mp3 for DL

I already posted this in the new track section, but I figured the TOTA group might be interested in hearing this. It might be my best work to date.

I started this track in December while playing around with some bass effects. It had some good ideas, but I left this project to do a track for Christmas. In fact, I based the Christmas tune entirely on the percussive lines of this one. I just recently got around to finishing it up, so here it is:

Node93 - Dream Dynamo

You can listen on the site, or you can click "Download" to DL the track. Feel free to use this track in your sets, etc (if it's worthy of that... lol)

The main emphasis from a composition point-of-view was polyphony, as there are at least 5 different melodies playing at the same time during the most climactic part of the track, in addition to pads and bass. I deliberately staggered the build-up to slowly introduce new elements. The bass, pads, and drums were carefully selected to be warm, filling, and effective, but not potent enough to take attention away from the melodic lines. Seems to work for me. The bass might be a bit too weak, but I don't want to make it much stronger for fear of overpowering the rest of the track.

EDIT: I recently updated this (03/08/2005). I changed the bass and put a few compressors on the synths. Hopefully it's now better mastered and sounds better. The development and melody are essentially the same.

Comments, suggestions, etc are always welcome.

Thanks. I really can tell that I'm improving. I look at tracks that I did a year ago and think WOW... what a mess they were. It still needs a bit of work, but I'm satisfied so far.

cool track! i dont agree with a couple of the synths there.. but htas just my preference.. its a good track overall great work on the synth layering!

Idunno... layering synths is kinda like... using different fonts in the same flyer. You have to contrast them a bit or it's kinda stupid-sounding. Some synths have certain frequencies that really stand out, and that makes them noticeable. If I use typical boring trance synths for every melodic line, then it just blends into a big mush.

Keep in mind that there are 5 or 6 melodic lines in this one... here's an inventory of the synths I used.
1) You can hear it coming in at about 1:00 - 1:10
2) Filtered in about 1:20-1:30, sounded on the offbeat... I'm thinking about lowering the volume of the highest octave and decreasing the resonance to make it sound less "horn-ish".
3) Sine tones
4) That really painful saw wave that gets a solo at about 4:00
5) The fast one with heavy delay, filtered in from 4:25 - 4:40
6) Main lead, 5:11
7) Pads
8) Bass
9) Carrying synths, there are 2 or 3 of these... one you can hear starting to come in at about 0:50-1:00 but it takes until about 1:40 until it's fully in.

I updated it! There's a new bassline and a lot of mastering changes. I'm not sure it's 100% done but it definitely sounds better.

Sounding a whole lot better dude.

My one suggestion to you would be: in order to make it a great listening track AND a great dancing track, put some phatter bass in there. I think it could use a deeper kick and a boost on the low-end (sub) frequencies on the bassline. Sounds great, just needs to be brought out more. It might even work just to do some post-eq'ing on the bass frequencies...

But that is, of course, just my opinion. Very well done nonetheless. :)

That's probably a very valid comment. I'm not working on the greatest equipment here (2 mediocre computer speakers with only a 20 watt sub), so I can't really judge the extremely low end that much at all. Sounds fine to me on here... I haven't listened to it on my big system yet since making changes, so maybe you're right. I'll keep it in mind.
