How beneficial is straight up classical piano proficiency skills, to trance / EDM producers?

I learned all that normal 'fur elise' when I was a kid, I can still play a few tunes but the musical style certainly isn't what I'm into any more.

I'd like to do some practice and get back up to speed with my actual piano chops, without boring myself less trying to play Mozart and Elton John and Richard Clayderman.

Anyone got any recommendations of semi - challenging tunes that aren't too uncool, that I could try and learn to play?

Or should I just forget about it, stick to one-finger melodies and spend my time pissing around on VSTs and learning how to program basslines?

I studied classical piano for 8 years. There are tons of easy and intermediate classical piano books on the market, which may be a good place to start. "Music for Millions: Classics to Moderns" books, which are published by Amsco Publications, are some of my favorites. There are six different versions of this book, to my knowledge: Easy (vol. 17), More Easy (vol. 27), Intermediate (vol. 37), Early Advanced (vol. 47), Sonatas and Sonatinas (vol. 67) and Themes and Variations (vol. 77).

I think knowledge of music theory is most important, not specific training on any one instrument

A combination of piano and theory knowledge is ideal, if only because pianos provide such an easy way to visualize the music, if that makes any sense

Knowing an instrument, particularly a versatile one like a midi keyboard, is definitely a help in translating the tunes in your head to real sounds.

I had approximately 4 piano lessons when I was 5 before I gave up. I wish I had kept it up now...like my swimming lessons.
